Today's the Day! Reopening of Notre Dame: ceremony tonight (Paris time) - livestream link

Hi all - well the long-awaited day has finally come. This evening Paris time (7pm, which is 6 hours ahead of US east coast and 9 hours ahead of US west coast), the ceremony to re-open Notre Dame will begin.

You can watch the whole thing on any of several YouTube channels. The easiest for English-speaking viewers may be French 24 English:

https://www.youtube.com/live/HSREjru-ZkY?si=2Ocvm8wqJUfvmsUr

(It may be that American channels are going to carry it live too, I just don't know. If you've heard word of that, please feel free to note that and /or provide additional links below.)

They have had to modify the ceremony a bit due to predicted bad weather here today from Storm Darragh (which incidentally caused SNCF to pre-emptively shut off all train traffic between Paris and Normandy for today and tomorrow). It’s a bit funny because this morning as I write this, the sun is shining. But the forecast is for something like 95% chance of rain, and winds.

None of the ceremony will now take place on the plaza in front of the cathedral - it will all take place inside.

And the concert that was supposed to start at 9 pm, after the ceremony, was all pre-recorded last night (some lucky folks in the vicinity got to see/hear Pharrell performing “Happy,” completely out of the blue !). It will be broadcast as if it is happening live.

The first mass will be tomorrow morning, 11 am Paris time. Again, broadcast live.

A great day for Paris!
Thanks much for the youtube link, Kim. Too bad Storm Darragh threw a wrench in some of the machinery; I see from the England forum that it's raising Cain there too. :O(

Thanks for the link, Kim! The photos we've seen in the media ahead of time are stunning. Watching the ceremony live will be a thrill.

What a special day, Kim! Thank you for sharing it with us. The link someone shared this week of a walk-through was beautiful and so touching to think it’s open again.

Thank you, Kim. Such a happy occasion!

I can still remember my son walking into our house and saying, “Notre Dame's on fire,” to which I responded, “It can’t be.” I have never been more sorry to be wrong.

Such a wonderful celebration and accomplishment. Was so happy to be there to see the progress in April.

There was a really good interview last Sunday on 60 Minutes with President Macron about the rebuilding; and the committment to reopen within 5 years. Very interesting. You can just google 60 minutes/notre dame/president Macron and it pops up.

It is so beautiful inside! And so wonderful to see all those people including the firefighters and it looks like they are in their turnout gear!

It was heartwarming to see and hear the appreciation for the firefighters, first responders and the people who spent years of their lives lovingly restoring the cathedral. I saw it from the outside in October, but I really look forward to seeing the new interior.

Thanks for sharing, Kim.
