To get a SIM card or not get a SIM card, that is the question

Hello folks! I'm traveling with my dad to France and England in early October to a bit of historical sightseeing (we're equally excited about French Revolution and World War 2 sites), and we're locked in a debate: should we or should not get SIM cards for our phones? For some context: we are Americans spending the majority of our time in France in Paris with excursions to Normandy. In England, we're spending most of our time in rural Kent visiting friends with occasional day trips into London. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

The answers will vary greatly depending on personal preferences (and maybe age). I started traveling before smart phones or internet so I am very comfortable being off-grid. I do a couple of 2 week trips abroad each year and so far have not needed to get a local SIM card. I do utilize wifi, either at a hotel in the evenings or from a pub/cafe. If you can get by without making phone calls, wifi is sufficient for email and texting.
If you do decide you want to use a SIM , check to see if your phone supports eSIM - no physical card required, just a download.
Either way, enjoy the trip.

It also depends on your cell phone provider in the USA and whether your phones are unlocked by that carrier so you can actually get a SIM card. If not unlocked, you will have to use their international plan (typically a per-day charge) or rely 100% on wifi connection and have no ability to make calls.

I have T-Mobile here in the US. Before this summer, it usually worked great. But this summer there was a major outage for carriers roaming and I was left without phone or date for more than a week. It depends on how long you're going to be travelling.

Hi everyone--thanks to all your advice! I think I'm going to play it safe and at least get a SIM card for my phone, and appreciate everyone's guidance!

When traveling, we like to have data, especially for internet. We have been happy with Airalo. They provide eSims, but data only. So, we keep your US phone number, and we can still message and send texts. The setup is pretty easy.

Another good, reliable option is Nomad. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, check out esimdb.com for their compilation of available eSIMs; you'll find options that can save you money. I've had reasonably good experience with Sparks, and I currently have an eSIM from Manet. It works OK.
