Tips for staying in Paris affordably for a family of 6?

We will be in Paris for 4 nights at the end of May 2024. Wondering if there are any suggestions for lodging for 6 people that doesn't break the bank in Paris? Looking for a family-friendly, safe area somewhat close to the sights. Or would it be better to stay just outside Paris and metro into the city each day? Thanks!

More details please so you get meaningful suggestions. How many rooms are you looking for? Are you looking for three doubles, two triples, etc? What does break the bank mean to you? What is the nightly budget in euros? Are any of the 6 children who need to share a room with adults or need a connecting room?

I would not normally recommend an apartment for 4 nights given the logistics hassles of apartments but for 6, I'd start looking there. Anywhere in Paris is fine -- I would not commute from outside.

hey hey kentjenvd
what does affordably mean to you with a family of 6 in euros? what kind of lodging as i an apartment or hotel with how many rooms as JHK asks.
what are the ages, how many beds? stay within the city center, outside paris will mean you have to add in cost of metro for all 6. use that to stay within. look at citadines.com or hotel-paris-londres-eiffel.com
look at booking.com for either hotel rooms or apartments. there has been a crackdown on apartments for a few years. keep in mind that check in is 3-4pm and check out is 10-11am. you don't want to be waiting for hours with luggage for it. usually hotels have baggage storage until check in. are you coming from the USA, stay awake roaming and walking around, jet lag is REAL.
keep checking since it may be too early and they don't have calendars up yet for next year.
if you find a place, you can email them for more info and book with them. good luck

I don’t recommend staying outside of central Paris, either. You will waste far too much time commuting back and forth and miss out on a lot. I’d downgrade my lodgings before I would do that.

Not sure what central Paris means. Paris has 20 arrondissements and uses the department number 75. You are either in Paris or you are somewhere else.

Why is this important?

Taxi Parisien fixed fares are valid only between the airports and Paris, not other than Paris.

You may use a ticket t+ to ride the RER as long as you only use stations within Paris, traveling outside Paris with only a ticket t+ will result in a fine if you are caught.

When making the general statement; ¨Paris is safe¨, that does not include Aulnay sous Bois, St Denis, Naneterre, or outside the 20 arrondissements, though there are indeed many areas outside which are safe as you will be in Paris.

If your objective is to visit Paris, stay in Paris. Yes, you could stay in Neuilly or Montrouge and use the métro, but I am not sure how much you will save, if anything.

As for hotels, reviewing what the Hotel Marignan offers will give you an idea of costs for basic accommodations.

If you decide on a short term apartment rental, be sure that any listing has the government required, 13 digit registration number.

There are budget hotels on the fringes of Paris like at the end of the metro 3 line at Galieni -- you might find a couple cheap triple rooms in a place like that.

Don't know if this helps, but figure on a minimum of 100 euros per person per night, whether an apartment or 2 triple hotel rooms...and that is the minimum, so don't be surprised if it is closer to 150 euros pp...just trying to frame the cost for you in realistic terms.

Booking.com is a good site to find these kinds of arrangements, from hotel triples and quads to apart hotels...I would steer clear of AirBnB, though, but if you go that route, pay close attention to amenities like A/C, because at the end of May, it will be heating up, and I find that most AirBnBs in Paris do not have A/C...much more likely to have A/C in hotels...

Are any of the 6 people adults who can chip in on the cost? A bunch of adults splitting the cost is a lot cheaper than two parents paying for lodging for themselves and 4 kids.

If you are considering apartments, be careful about the number of bathrooms (more than one would probably be unusual; might you need two?) and the type of beds as well as the a/c situation. Listings tend to count fold-out sofas and futons in the living room as beds, but I wouldn't want to sleep on one of those for 4 nights.

Here’s an example of two triples for 6 adult people (it would be good to know your children’s ages) for a random night this fall. They don’t have rates for May yet, you’d have to contact the hotel directly to inquire. On booking.com the De Porte Doree gets good reviews, can include breakfast and free cancellation for just under $500 per night. Motel One at the same Meteo stop (3rooms for 6) is a similar price but with no free breakfast.

I second the Cuilancourt. It's in a great non-touristy area on the backside of Montmarte, easy walk to Sacre Coeur. Not bad restaurant next door with big outdoor seating area, and a lovely boulangerie next to that. Lots of other shops and restaurants nearby. 2 block walk to the metro. I've stayed there twice and enjoyed it.

Our family with 6 just stayed here and it was great. Easy metro access and walkable too. It was grandma, mom and dad, kids were 20, 7, and 4.

Won't help the OP or anybody else anytime soon - no availability until August '24.

But thanks for posting anyway.

Oh, and no A/C...and I plugged in the first available date of July 30 for a week, and it was $1100 a night, likely due to the Olympics.

Thanks for these great suggestions! I'm new to the forum, so will try to learn to be more specific in my questions and details :) OK, we will not bother looking outside of Paris. I will look into these other suggestions.
