What would be a suitable tip for the hotel concierge who possibly
1) arranges for a taxi
2) makes restaurant reservations
3) helpfully locates a blanchisserie (which I understand is the term for a place that takes in laundry and washes/dries it for a fee as opposed to you sitting in a launderette DIY)
Thank you for input.
Travel&Leisure suggests €5-10 per interaction. The lower end for simple tasks. More if they had to do anything time consuming- like jumping thru hoops to get an in demand restaurant reservation or theatre seat.
I tend to overtip and I tip the person who cleans my room but I would not tip and have not tipped a concierge in Paris for any of the services mentioned. None of this is stuff is what I consider above and beyond for a concierge such that a tip is warranted. I guess if I ever had a concierge get me a reservation at some restaurant that was not otherwise available or get me tickets to a sold out event, I would tip them but the three actions mentioned above are completely run of the mill things.
Edit: I'd love to see where it is that Travel & Leisure suggests 5€ to 10€ per interaction with a concierge. Please note that Conde Nast Traveler suggests tipping a concierge if they go "above any beyond" and their examples are "securing hard-to-get reservations at star restaurants or more out-of-the-ordinary tasks, such as helping organize a wedding proposal." I do know one person who had a concierge help with a wedding proposal and that concierge refused the tip and was apparently offended by the offer so I guess you just never know.
These are not the types of services that need be tipped. Americans just cannot help themselves, they feel to urge to tip for everything.
I would tip a few euros for the first two but not for a laundromat
Helping to locate a blanchisserie is definitely worthy of a tip in my opinion! :-)
A hotel with a concierge will offer laundry service.
It’s usually with a hefty charge for individual pieces. I’m always looking for a place that will do bulk laundry, wash, dry and fold. That saves us a couple of hours at a laundromat. Or an airbnb with a washer. Laundry halfway through a trip is essential if you’re packing light?
Just saying…. I would tip for that info! ;-)
