Hi we are trying to get from there to there. If we rent a car an additional $1300 is charged to go across country border. Is there a better/less expensive option? Open to all suggestions. Trip is for July 2018
You can get there on a train from Bourg St Maurice changing at Chambery, Turin, Chivasso. It does take 8 hours, but should be a lot less than $1300.
Find a car drop off location in France closest to the Italian border and another pick up location in Italy as close to the French border as possible. Take a taxi across to the pick up location. This is easy to do using AutoEurope as they will list all rental car locations. We have done this, and paid €150 instead of €1000, Portugal to Spain. Our hotel found a taxi driver willing to do this.
Just to be clear, will you already have a rented car while you are in Tignes? And if so, you will not be returning to France? Or if so, can't rent the car in Italy before going to Tignes?
Yes we are renting a car in France and headed to Italy after skiing in Tignes. But we have to stop off in monferratto first. Does anyone know what would be a good place to drop off then get driven across the border to pick up a car in Italy?
I guess what I am driving at is to fly into Milan and rent a car there, then drive to Tignes. I have skied at Les Deux Alpes in July, so I guess Tignes is open as well.
Edit - You could drive to Chambery and turn the car in, then take the TGV to Turin and rent a car there.
