Tick-tock tick-tock... only 4 days left in France and looking for central location to spend them

Where did the days go!

After 5 days in Paris, 2 days in Bayeux (Normandy), 2 days at Mont St Michel and now two nights near Ambois we are down to our last 4 nights and a wake-up before returning to CA.

I want to take time when we get back to post info about our trip that might be useful to others - you can take a small backpack to the Louvre and I can't imagine not getting a GPS with a car rental - when they go.

But for now I have a question. We want to wind down and enjoy the countryside our last four nights. We would like to see more of Bayeux and Rouen and really like Normandy. We didn't get a chance to visit Honfluer.

Any recommendation on which location would be better for a home base just to enjoy the countryside and any things to see that aren't in Rick's guidebooks?

Thank you

Mark and Lori

Since I am a big fan of the Loire Valley and I see you are currently near Amboise, I'll vote for someplace in the western portion of the Loire region like Azay-le-Rideau (very small village, yes it is in Rick's guidebook but a good place to unwind -- I can recommend Hotel Biencourt) or Chinon (we didn't have time to do the self-guided walk in the old town and would have loved to -- beautiful and probably a little more choice of things to see/do than Azay), or even further west in Saumur.
