The Train Strike and Eurostar via London

We are planning on taking Eurostar from London to Paris on Monday April 23rd.

This is listed as a strike day on the rail strike calendar. I checked the Eurostar website and the only strike days it lists affecting Eurostar service is April 13 and April 14.

Can I assume that we will be okay? Or does Eurostar just not know yet if they will be affected April 23rd?

If our train does strike, is buying a plane ticket our only option to get to France on that day?

Thank you!

Strikes are a very inconsistent issue. I would assume you would be OK. Even when there is a strike it doesn't mean that all trains are shut down. There may be some inconvenience as to schedule and time but you should get there that day. And the Eurostar is a different train company than the French trains.

On strike days, 75-80% if Eurostar trains are running. Presumably they haven’t planned as far ahead as 23 April yet. They will put you on another train if yours is cancelled, but check their website closer to 23rd. No need to buy a plane ticket as yet.

Thank you Frank and Jennifer. Both of your replies were very helpful and reassuring. We will continue to check and see what happens! :-)

I hadn't thought about the strike affecting the Eurostar:(. We have tickets on the new direct service from London to Amsterdam on a scheduled strike day in June. Guess I'll have keep my fingers crossed.

For infrequent or first time Europe travelers this can be very troublesome. But, sometime you will learn or accept just going with the flow. You can kill a lot brain cells worrying about what might happen. My approach is only to worry about things that I can control. Train strikes is not one of them. In nearly a year of European travel over 20, 25 years we have only had one train strike - that was in Spain. You just adjust.

Eurostar has been cancelling around 5 London - Paris and 3 London - Brussels trains each strike date but cannot yet predict what will happen a week from now. The same Paris or Brussels to London.

Keep checking their website - it is the most accurate and up-to-date information you will get.
