The Louvre will be closed June 3rd + Updates

Hello fellow travelers,

My goodness... I was just doing a bit of extra research, & found out that the Louvre Museum will be closed tomorrow, June 3rd, due to the high level of water in the Seine River...

Many of the matches have been postponed due to the weather. I guess Nadal didn't miss much, this year.

Oh Priscilla, I am so sorry you're having such bad weather, though I'm sure you are finding ways to make the most of your time and enjoying being with your daughter.

Priscilla,

I am sorry for the unexpected closures but I was in Paris last month with my children and we enjoyed several museums that are not as well known but the collections were equally amazing(and they were less expensive).

The Musee d'Arte Moderne- not only does the permanent collection include several Impressionist works by Raoul Dufy, Matisse(the actual La Danse ballet backdrop), Picasso, Delaunay... but the temporary exhibit of Albert Marquet is wonderful. Crowds are lighter and the cost is much lower-permanent collections free, I think I only paid for myself for the Marquet exhibit(12euro) students free. You feel like you have the place almost to yourself.

Centre Pompidou- the building is crazy looking but the permanent collection includes Picassos, Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Kandinsky and the Gerard Fromager temporary exhibit was wonderful. We paid about 18euro total for myself and 2 students, the views from the balconies and rooftop are amazing. DO NOT wait in line to go to the top of Notre Dame when you can go straight to this rooftop and take photos with Notre Dame in the background.

And lastly, the Institut du Monde Arab has a fascinating temporary exhibit on Oriental(east and far east) gardens that we enjoyed and the architecture of the building is fascinating. The rooftop views from this left bank spot further down the river are wonderful.
I have blogged about each of these if you need more details.

I know you will find plenty to enjoy- There is never enough time in Paris.

Thanks everyone for contributing such useful information!

Kathy & Kim,
It's too bad that these museums are closed to the public now, but I understand the need to save the works of art which are at risk of getting damaged...

MrsEB & Chexbres,
It's really too bad that the interrupted routes of transportation (due to the floods) have affected many...

Hi Chani,
I really shouldn't complain :-) My daughter & I are having a wonderful trip & we're enjoying some sunny days in L'Isle sur la Sorgue right now.
The worse thing about the rain is that my non-waterproof shoes get wet, but then they dry overnight ;-)

Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for the detailed information regarding the museums you visited, I will reread your post again when we get to Paris next Wednesday!
Thanks for sharing your blog too!

You're a champ for not letting showers (and damp shoes) ruin your trip, Priscilla. 'Atta girl!

I was just in Paris 2 weeks ago, and as far as museums go my favorites were the D'Orsay and the Marmottan--not covered by the Museum Pass but well-worth the admission, located in a lovely old house and full of wonderful Impressionists and right now the special exhibit is L'art et L'Enfant--children as subjects in Impressionist works, really enjoyable. Nice neighbourhood and park to walk through once you exit the La Muette metro, lots of little restaurants for a bite if needed. The Pompidou was also really satisfying.

"to ensure the protection of the works located in flood zones"

Since the flood waters are expected to remain high for the next 7 days - possibly longer, if it starts raining again - it would be a good idea to keep checking to see what will be open when you arrive in Paris.

Things are going to take a long time to dry out, despite everyone's best efforts. The main concern is the amount of electrical wiring involved, a lot of which is underwater.

Chexbres,
Yes, I agree completely... I will keep checking...
I also contacted the hotel where we'll be staying, and I was reassured that they are not having any issues due to the rain.

I don't know much about electricity,
but wiring under water sounds very dangerous!
