The Last Time I Saw Paris

With life starting to return to the way we knew it , a visit to The City of Light is always at the top of the list for many of us . This beautiful song by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II always brings tears to my eyes , especially in this rendition by Darlene and Jonathan Edwards ( AKA Jo Stafford and Paul Weston ) Try not to cry ! - https://youtu.be/0m15vMrjsO8

I love the sentiment ... but I'm sorry, not a fan of that rendition.
The last time I saw Paris was early June 2019. I'd spent several days in Nimes and day-tripping before spending my 2nd week in Paris. The weather was lovely (it's often been super rainy at that time in previous years) and I stayed at my new favorite, Hotel Diana in the 5th. My chronic back problems were flaring up so I took the bus (first time!) almost exclusively. I wandered around what was left of Notre Dame and mourned its loss. I mostly did what I love most in Paris: wandered and explored -- and ate lots of croissants.
Fingers crossed I make it back in late September...

My last time was nearly eight years ago, too long. And it wasn't sentimental, it was a "thrilling" drive from Gare du Nord to the Peripherique, missing the exit for Reims, backtracking to it, and on east. No time for a sentimental farewell. But I'm sure I'll return.

I was in my 20s the first time I traveled to Europe. It was a whirlwind trip to London, Paris, Rome, Venice and Frankfurt. I fell in love with Paris and have returned many times over the years. My last trip to Paris was April 2018, a year before the fire at Notre Dame. Every time I leave Paris Iโ€™m hoping itโ€™s not my last time. The history, architecture, language, museums, and baguettes. I miss all of it. Made reservations last night for 2022.

The last time I saw Paris was about a year ago. It was great. Museums were empty. It was right after they had reopened. Shortly after I left, the door slammed shut, and stayed shut. Still waiting.

Kim, you are So lucky. I was last in Paris Oct 2019. I had taken my sister to see it. We had great weather. She did the 1st time 'touristy' things and I wandered around the city in my favorite neighborhoods. We stayed at Hotel Diana and both loved it. Since I was so close I went to see the tapestries at the Cluny. I had never been, but will certainly go again.

We left Paris 3 days after the terrorist attacks in November 2015. We had been in France for 26 days. In Paris for 9. We missed out going to the top of the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and Notre Dame as that was scheduled for our last 3 days there. None of it happened because everything closed. It was a strange time to be in Paris. The day after the attacks, people were talking to us on the streets and in shops. Making sure we were OK. Seeing Paris rise up and dust itself off after that crazy event was actually inspiring. I feel even more in love with Paris and I dream of going back almost daily. I will return. I will see my beautiful city again.

My wife and I are going on an 8 day tour entitled Paris at a Slow Pace in September and want to stay for an additional 4 days independently. I at first thought the extra days would be ideal to just improvise there but perhaps we should visit another region and return to Paris for the flight home . I would think Provence would be a bit too far for just 3 - 4 days. Any feed back is much appreciated
Thanks

I'd just advise not to be far away on the morning of your flight home. In my mind Provence to Paris on the last day would be too far.... things can happen

Thank you Nigel , Iโ€™m taking your advice and will research other points of interest, such as an evening tour of Paris with car and driver perhaps.

My last time was the first week of June 2019. Heading back to France 27 Nov - 8 Dec, couple of nights in Strasbourg then Paris with day trips. Was planning on 3 countries for Christmas Markets, but decided it would be easier for just 1 country this year and Paris is always a must for me.

The last time I saw Paris was the night before France won the World Cup in 1998. That night the three tenors (Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras) performed a free concert on the field in front of the Eiffel Tower before a packed crowd of thousands. People were even in the trees watching the performance. It was a thrill to say the least. The Parisians were wild with excitement before the big match.

The last time I saw Paris was September 9, 2018, at the Stade de France for the World Cup Victory Celebration and after party (plus a 2-1 win against the Netherlands) Unforgettable evening for fans of Les Bleus.

Mary, I remember that night you mentioned in 1998, too, before the Final. Very exciting.

Congratulations Bobby.
Anyone who has been to Bibracte has earned his one-year visa, even if he claims to be from Mars. Bonne chance.

Hi,

Great post. I totally share the sentiments, can't wait to get back which most likely and realistically will be the summer of 2022.

The last time I saw Paris was in the summer of 2018. I like the version sung by Ann Sothern, a classic.

Hi,

If I think of the classic version by Ann Sothern, then I have to also include another classic on Paris, that sung by Ella Fitzgerald. When she sings of "Paris when it sizzles," I have had that experience too .
