We arrive Marseilles airport mid-afternoon mid-September, need TGV to Avignon. Do we need to guess a TGV time and purchase early, or can we purchase TGV when we arrive?

The train schedule is listed and tickets are available for purchase online 30 to 90 days in advance:

If you know for certain that your flight is not going to be canceled or delayed then buy the ticket in advance to save, otherwise wait until you get to the train station.

If you are arriving at the Marseille Provence airport, you use the regional train to get to Avignon. You will take a shuttle bus to the Vitrolles train station and then the regional train (TER) to Avignon Centre. The info is here

You buy the bus ticket from the driver. If you download the SNCF Connect app, you can buy your train ticket through the app. Are you staying in Avignon? If not, add some clarification as the instructions might be different.
