We will have ten hours (8:00 hr. to 18:00 hr.) in Marseille, France in late-September (a Tuesday). What would be the best use of our brief time to get a "feel" of the place? Anything that would require standing in long lines for an admission ticket is out. We're thinking a leisurely walk along several streets in a district or two of the city, with an equally leisurely lunch and a beverage and/or a sweet-stop in the afternoon and some more people watching. What would be the best location(s) for this serendipitous stop? Also, what transportation is best between the cruise ship terminal and the recommended district(s)?
Is this a true 10 hours on the ground or 10 hours from the possible dock arrival to the proposed sailing time? Have you checked with your cruise line to see what they offer?
Do you have Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports? It covers Marseille, and no doubt many of the other destinations on your cruise, and has all the details of the logistics and options for getting between the cruise ship terminal and the sights in each place.
In addition to any replies you get here, look at Cruise Critic. Here's their France Ports Forum: http://tinyurl.com/cdbsfhn. Here's their Marseille Port Review: http://www.cruisecritic.com/ports/newport.cfm?ID=167. And here are their Roll Calls, where you can find others on your sailing, so you can arrange to split the cost of a private tour with others if you wish: http://tinyurl.com/ap7h55m
You can have a very leisurely (and memorable) lunch if you are up for several hours of bouillabaisse. Marseilles is the place for the real thing.
Just reserve in advance. (Sorry, no specific recommendations from me, but a good guidebook will direct you.)
