Temporary passport while waiting for a long-term talent passport visa?

While waiting the estimated 90 days for my long-term French talent passport visa to be processed, I would like to travel outside the US for business for a few weeks at a time. The representative at VFS said that there is a way to request the US State Dept. to issue me a temporary passport that I can use until my original passport is returned to me. Does this make any sense?

I originally thought the only way to travel during this period was to request my original passport back from the French Embassy which would suspend my visa processing for the time the passport is out of their hands.

I would not care except that 3 months is a really long time for me to be without a passport so hoping there is some reasonable solution available.

I have never heard of visas taking 3 months to be processed and entered into your passport, nor have I heard of replacement passports by the US being issued on a temporary basis.

I would contact the French Embassy/consulate, explain the situation, and ask for an update, maybe expedited handling.

Pretty technical. Who knows here? Contact a passport office and ask. My concern would be if they cancelled your original passport when issuing the temporary. The long passport number in your passport is tied to your file in the gov't data base. When the swipe your passport at the US entry point, that is what they are accessing. Can you have two valid numbers? Have no idea nor does anyone else except for the passport office.

I think you would be requesting a second passport, not a replacement or temporary one, though since you can get a second one, there might be something such as a short term one.

And yes, some visas can take time to process.

The US will issue two passports to the same person. This is usually done for people traveling in the Middle East who don't want certain countries knowing they have been to certain other countries. I don't know if this would be done in your case. You will have to talk to someone at the passport office.

It is very very important that if you apply for a second passport you don't call it a temporary or replacement as this will get your existing passport cancelled.
