Tech challenges

Well the stars aligned and I’m here in France. Yeah. As happy as I am to be here, I’m having a few glitches with my tech.

My phone remains in airplane mode because my US provider Verizon’s plan is 10 bucks a day for a limited data, ah hard pass.
I downloaded google maps to my phone so I can use it without wifi. However, whenever I need to use the map google searches for a carrier or wifi. I figure I must have a setting turned off or something. The google map feature usually works without internet. I’d appreciate any ideas or help. I really need my map.

So usually when I go to Europe I go to Orange and get a French or Spanish
number and then use whats app to communicate with people.
This time I changed my tmobile plan and even added a high speed data pass,
and the GPS was still off.
I know there are some Mobile phones where you can have two phone numbers
or two SIM cards to switch between,
I had so many problems with mapquest, google maps and Uber location, so
next time I will go back to my usual buy a European SIM card mode after I touch down.

Try the mapsme app - download it on your hotel's wifi and download the relevant maps for your trip - it works so much better offline than Google

I agree with Lissie. For Europe, I like maps.me a whole lot more than google maps. All you need to do is download the maps when you have Wifi. I pin places like museums, hotels and restaurants. It will determine routes offline. When you are out and about, it will give you step by step instructions and will "recalculate" when necessary. It works just like GPS.

I also have Verizon. If you ever need cell service, you will get 24 hours for your $10, so if you plan it right you can use it consecutive days (within the 24 hours).

Also, you can find free wifi in quite a few places. One of my favorite "bargains" in Paris was at the Starbucks by the Sacre Cour. Cup of coffee, glass of water, restoom and wifi was $1! Coffee shops, fast food, sometimes TIs will tend to have wifi.

Does maps.me have step by step walking directions that work offline (if you set them when on wifi and leave hotel). Google maps does not allow walking directions offline, only driving

Walking directions with Maps.me does work well offline. We used it numerous times in multiple countries both in North America and in Europe. We normally download the country maps prior to leaving home, they can be downloaded over wifi if your plans change.

Maps.me does have step by step walking directions and recalculates as needed. In advance of trips, I download maps and pin places of interest--hotels, restaurants, sites, etc. You can but do not have to plan a route before you leave Wifi. I use when we are out sightseeing and will change the directions based on where we are going.
