Taxis is Paris for 4

We are a family of 4: 2 adults, 1 teen and 1 preteen. Will taxis easily fit us all? My husband is a big guy so he usually sits in the front but not sure if in Europe they would allow this or would we need to ask for an SUV? or should we just use the metro, we rode the subway in NY and the kids hated it so I'm trying to avoid it plus cost wise it's about the same.

In Paris use public transport. Many taxi drivers will not take 3 people in a cab so if you flag one you. have to ask? Many cabbies use the front right seat as their office. You can summon a cab on the ap and indicate 4 -- but you are in Paris; be Parisians and use the very efficient public transport. Hard to imagine costs will be 'the same' to use cabs. We have never found that so when using cabs.

Use the métro & RER trains. When we were kids, we didn’t dictate to our parents what transportation we take when they generously took us to Europe with them. Taxis — and you might need two taxis — are very expensive especially when you are sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic not moving.

Cost wise I had calculated 2 euros per person so if a taxi is 10 to 12 euros it would be about the same if one taxi could take us all. Besides de kids hating the subway in NY my husband joined in on the hating which made me upset cuz sometimes metro is just more convenient due to traffic. Thanks all for the input.

It sounds like you need Uber XL.

The New York subway leaves a lot to be desired. I was just there last week visiting an offspring. The Paris metro is very different with plenty of escalators for the big guy and stations that are regularly updated. There's no comparison. I'm with Continental on this one.

I am not following your logic referencing taxi cost. You are assuming all taxi rides will cost only 10€ to 12€? Just calling a taxi will cost 4€ in addition to the fare.

Depending upon the length of your stay and where it is you are going, there are transportation passes that can greatly reduce the 2.10€ cost per person, per métro/bus ride.

The métro is far more comprehensive than is the NY subway, I don’t think that there is any real comparison.

I've downloaded Freenow and checked routes from the Hotel to different places and the fares for taxis are reasonable (10 to 15) but the taxis say they seat 3 people (like everybody has mentioned), Vans seat 6 but they cost almost double. Posting in case anybody is in a similar situation.

Hi Mom, we do take a taxi from the airport to the hotel. Get in the taxi line and there will surely be a van to take your family into Paris. Once in the city, we walk everywhere. After 15-20,000 steps, your husband and kids will be happy to jump on the metro! We’ve found the Navigo weekly pass to be a great deal. It’s not just a monetary decision. You’ll see so much more by walking around the city and exploring the streets, sights, and shops. Think ‘journey’, not ‘destination’.

There is no extra charge for a van for 4 from the airport. You can order a van cab with an ap but I think you pay a 4 Euro fee for ordering. (7 if it is in advance as for the airport run'

It will be easy to find a van taxi at CDG but as others have said, for regular taxis that you would hail on the street in Paris or request via the dispatcher, most will not allow a fourth passenger to sit in the front seat. For example, in 2021, I was at Gare d'Austerlitz and a family of four, including an infant and a maybe 8-year-old, was going around trying to find a driver willing to allow the father or the mother sit in the front seat and no driver would agree to it. I too am married to big guy who intensely dislikes riding the NYC subway and we lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for about 20 years so that was a problem. My family was in NYC today and we walked or took a taxi to everywhere we wanted to go. My husband also dislikes the Paris metro and we now never take it when traveling together. We walk everywhere and then jump in a taxi as needed. It really depends on why your husband dislikes the subway to see if the Paris metro will be okay for him. If he, like my husband and very tall son, feel like the system is designed for average size people (as it should be) and that they are taking up too much room and also really dislike being that close to strangers, the greater efficiency of the Paris metro system will not make a difference -- well, maybe the extra escalators will help because they can exit the system faster. Try the metro out and see how the family feels about it and then be prepared to spend some extra money, if the budget allows, to address their comfort and take van taxis or Uber XLs as needed, understanding and accepting that it will take longer to get from place to place because of traffic. I mean really do you want to get back from Paris with everyone but you having had a horrible time because they hated the metro?

Brilliant response JHK.

We work with our children to see if they are flexible, teachable.
But a spouse is different: if one person in a couple has a hard "no" then that's the answer.

Unlike London, Paris taxis are regular passenger cars of all makes and models. One night we had a big ol Mercedes. They are meant for 2, or 3 squeezed together.
