Taxi Ride from CDG to the Right Bank of Paris And Attempted Shenanigans

Yesterday, my husband and I arrived at CDG and went to the official taxi line and got in a taxi to our Right Bank destination. The driver and I even had a little chat in French in which he confirmed the address and what it is near, and he put 56€ on the meter. He seemed like a nice guy. He even offered me some water when I started coughing and that is when I noticed that he had put a 16.50€ supplement on the meter. I did not say anything about the supplement at that time in case I was misunderstanding what that 16.50€ referred to and I thought it better to wait to see what he would charge when we got to our destination rather than jump to conclusions. At our destination, he asked for 72.50€. I asked why the extra charge, and he replied that it was for luggage. I replied that there is no extra charge for luggage and if there was, it would not be for two small checked bags and two small backpacks. I had 60€ set aside to pay him and I gave him that and he took it and gave me no change. I let that go because I budget 60€ for my taxi ride from CDG. The exchange was so low key that my husband did not even realize what was happening. I questioned whether to post this item because ultimately, I was not ripped off, but I decided to post it to remind travelers that the fact that a taxi is an authorized taxi does not mean that the taxi scams that we hear of will not be attempted. I feel like this guy thought “I’ll give it the supplement charge a shot and if it works, I’ll have 16.50€ and if it does not, I’ll just back off and no harm, no foul.”

When I get in an official cab at CDG, I conspicuously take photos of the driver's credentials, the number for reporting a problem, the setting on the meter, etc. Make sure the driver notices...and should you need to point out to him his error, also point out to him you are reporting him if he doesn't remove the charge.

You should have reported him regardless your satisfaction with the transaction.

Sorry, but you were ripped off. Involuntary tipping is just another way of getting ripped off.

That's a good reminder. Thanks. It also reminds me why I use services like Bolt in Europe. The price is up front. If I don't like it, I can take the train (or bus).

I’m landing at CDG on the 14th and will take a taxi for the first time, I usually go RER, so this is a valuable post for me. Thanks!

We've never had a problem, but holding firm is the way to go.

Thanks JHK. As a very seasoned Paris visitor, almost a Parisian, your post is a valuable service. It’s never happened to us, but we’d do the same.

I'm a great fan of Bolt and have never experienced any issues but that changed with my Bolt driver who took me to the airport in Baku recently. Not only was he an atrocious driver, texting on his phone, not paying attention to the road and swerving across lanes and general bad driving but he also asked me to pay him when he dropped me off. As his English was quite poor and my Azerbaijani was completely non existent I tried to explain that it was all paid upfront via the app. I stood my ground, he became irate and I left him to it before reporting him via the app and awarding him one star.

My Bolt driver in Tbilisi a few hours later was the complete opposite so he received a good review and a modest tip.

Whilst it's good to have set fares for taxi rides from the airport to major cities such as Paris, Rome etc there will always be some drivers who try it on. I had one driver in Rome who asked for more because he claimed that the set fare barely covered his fuel but I refused. He was quite aggressive about it and my wife told me that if she was on her own she would have felt intimidated and would likely have caved in to his demand. In cases like this and the OP's it's worth noting the details of the driver and making a formal complaint as it's not fair on the decent drivers to be associated with rogue drivers.

While taxi drivers are not tipped, rounding up the fare, giving 60€ for a 56€, is a very common practice. So common that a driver would not necessarily expect to have 4€ ready to offer for change. It is unfortunate that the driver asked for a nonexistent luggage supplement, but I don't see how you were scammed, you avoided it.

I take a lot of taxis from the airports and have found the drivers to be very honest. Fares are fixed with no surge-pricing and only taxis have HOV access on A1 into the city and only taxis have access to bus lanes and other special streets and short cuts that VTCs do not. If I do not take the train/métro, I only otherwise use Taxis Parisiens from the airports.

I agree that an involuntary tip is theft, but because I always tip the driver the 4€ in change from the 60€ that I always have on me when I land at CDG if he or she helps put the luggage in the car and/or helps take it out at my apartment and this guy did that, I did feel like I had been ripped off. As soon as we stopped, he told me the total and hopped out to help get our luggage out of the trunk. Our discussion about the fare took place on the sidewalk. I wrote down his ID number when I was getting out of the car. I knew that the only way I would pay the extra 16.50€ would be if the driver made a scene and my conflict avoidant and easily embarrassed husband insisted on paying to make a scene end. The driver sheepishly took the 60€ so I thought why get him trouble for an unsuccessful attempt. One of my uncles was a taxi driver and I have a soft spot in my heart for them, so I was not inclined to file a report.

I thought CDG taxi ride into Paris be 55 E or 60 E depends on which half of Paris your final destination is. There is a map showing this delineation , for most of the city 55 Euro.

After that rather taxing unpleasant experience with only a carry-on taking the RER B Paris Nord to CDG last Sept, I was tempted to do this this taxi option with its set price this year, ie, pay the price and be done with it.

I rejected the taxi option this trip each time between Paris Nord and CDG; this time I had more than just the single carry-on, opted for the RER B instead but at a different dep time....a big difference.

I would have left no tip, so he doesn't get the 5 Euro extra, ie one less cappuccino

Here is a link to the current fixed airport taxi rates: https://www.g7.fr/en/paris-taxi-fares
CDG to Right Bank = 56€
CDG to Left Bank = 65€
Orly to Right Bank = 45€
Orly to Left Bank = 36€
There are also signs that say that at the baggage claim area at Terminal 2E.
