We are staying in St Malo and the scheduled times for the special bus to/from Mont St Michael don't work for us. We were going to take a taxi there, but were wondering if anyone had noticed a taxi rank there or on the way to Ponterson so we can get back to St Malo by taxi.
I have not seen a taxi rank at Le Mont Saint Michel nor on the way to Pontorson. There might be taxis at Pontorson station but you would be better served calling and arranging a taxi and not planning on seeing a taxi stand. It is almost 60 kilometers from Saint Malo to Le Mont Saint Michel and the taxi will cost somewhere between 80€ and 100€. The driver who takes you may be willing to return to get you or wait for you for a 200€ fare.
Thanx. That helps.
Are you talking about taking a taxi all the way from St Malo to MSM, or taking the train to Pontorson and then taxi from there to MSM? You should be able to call a taxi at the station in Pontorson to take you to MSM, or there may be taxis there when the train comes in.
I would not take a taxi that far, ever. I think you are underestimating the time and distance. For example, St. Malo is on a peninsula, and there are bridges and traffic lights to get to the main highway. I would seriously suggest a car rental because there is so much to see in Brittany.
But the "shoreside" of MSM is tremendously developed as a tourist reception area. (I'm not referring to the nearby Pontsorson, which has everything from a crocodile farm to a fudge shop ... I'm talking about a street that's walkable from the MSM entrance gate, if you don't care to take the fancy modern free shuttle bus.) In the absolute worst case, you could go into one of the many, mostly not so fancy, modern hotels on the shore road and ask the reception to call their partner taxi company. I mean, if they get a cut, they don't really care if you are staying there, as long as you don't delay a resident guest waiting for a cab. But it's fair to guess that it's not a major taxi destination.
Have you considered renting a car and driving? We drove from MSM to Cancale and back and enjoyed our day!
You may book a taxi from Saint Malo to Mont Saint Michel, the taxi driver waits for you for 2.5 hours and then back to St Malo ; it costs about 170€. The problem is that you should not stay too long on Mont Saint Michel and be back late to the taxi.
Another solution is to rent a car for the day or hire a guide picking you up from St Malo for the Mont Saint Michel tour.
Thanx for the replies. I think we have simply evaded the issue altogether and rented a room for the night on the island. Because of scheduling, if we decide not to take the train back to St Malo the hotel says they can call a taxi, something in the 80 euro range. Not pleased with the price, but if that's what it costs to address the scheduling issue so be it.
The trip adviser reviews make the hotel sound rather like sleeping in an alley, but what the hell it's only one night. :)
We've stayed on Mt St Michel 4 times and found it to be a worthwhile splurge. There's lots of climbing involved to get to your room, either in the hotel or through town (or both) and they are not luxurious accommodations, but far from sleeping in an alley. Comfortable and clean at a minimum every time we've stayed. Last time was at Le Vieille Auberge in a room way up on the island (almost as high as the Abbey). Great views. The time before that was in a charming little room up lots of stairs at le Mouton Blanc. That was with our grandchildren and they were delighted to sleep in a loft above our bed.
In my opinion, it's a real treat to sleep on the island. If you're not happy with what you've booked, maybe you could shop around a little. No room on the Island is cheap, so you shouldn't be looking forward to anything but a pleasant night in an incomparable setting.
