We're thinking of taking a taxi from Charles de Gaulle to Paris. We have two adults and two children and are thinking of taking a taxi. We plan on only taking carry on luggage. Would it be acceptable to take a taxi with 4 and with luggage? Any advise?

Very acceptable. It is a flat rate of 50 EUR to any Right Bank location, and 55 EUR to any Left Bank location. That is just a little more than the cost of taking the RER and Metro and the taxi will deliver you right to the door, with your luggage.
If you choose to take the convenient taxi from CDG, be sure and walk to the official taxi ranks. You may be stopped by people along the way posing as a taxi. There is signage along the way to guide you.
Does the question hide another concern? Why would it not be acceptable to take a taxi? That is a fairly common solution and with four it is often as reasonable as using public transit. Or am I reading too much between the lines?
We used the car service Paris Webservices, recommended in the RS guidebook. It was great -- the car was clean and new, the driver spoke good English, and they have a guarantee to wait for you in case your flight is delayed. They give a discount when you show your copy of the guidebook.
What is the cost of this car service? The information is not much use without that central fact. A taxi will cost 50 or 55; what does the other service cost.
There is no need for a car service since the taxi fares to/from CDG have been standardized. It will undoubtedly cost more. The city took the "risk" out of taking a taxi when it standardized the rates for those fares.
The CDG to/from Paris flat rate of 50€/55€ is for up to 4 passengers and includes any other possible charge such as for luggage. Do not accept offers from clandestine drivers soliciting from within the terminals. Taxi drivers are not tipped.
