Taking Train from CDG to Lyon (City) - Direct TGV from CDG or via Gare Lyon in Paris?

Hello! My husband and I arrive Sept 9th at CDG at 10am. We want to take the TGV to Lyon as we have a hotel booked there that night.

I am seeing that there appears to be options to take the TGV directly form CDG, but the timeline to get from the airplane to the train may be a little tight. I see a few later trains (that still get us in at a relatively decent hour in the afternoon) that leave from Gare Lyon in Paris (that go to the Lyon Part Dieu station in the city of Lyon). However, I understand it is a bit of a journey (40 mins +?) to get from CDG to Gare Lyon in Paris.

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions about the best thing to do - It appears I can purchase tickets from Omio and exchange them during the day if we happen to arrive at a later than expected time. I am also wondering if we have to go to Gare Lyon from CDG (depending on the timing of trains/our arrival/time it takes to get through customs), whether taxi or a bus or train is best.

Any suggestions appreciated.

  • we just have carry-on luggage, but this is also on a Saturday if that makes a difference.

Merci!

With carry-on luggage, you are likely to be able to get the 11:57 train from CDG but indeed there is no guarantee. The next train is at 13:57. Annoyingly, it's a "Ouigo" low cost train so it is less comfortable, non-refundable, and has some luggage restrictions. Still, it is better than going to Gare de Lyon, because in any case I would not recommend to try for a Gare de Lyon departure earlier than 2 PM (taking into account the 45 to 60-minute taxi ride).

Omio is a reputable reseller, but with SNCF Connect (the rail operator's sales channel) you have the guarantee of the best price, and the app is quite user friendly.

I’d plan on an hour to get to Gare de Lyon from CDG. The general rule is to allow 3 hours between your flight’s ETA and the train’s scheduled departure time if you are taking a train from CDG and 4 hours if you are taking the train from a station in Paris. I’d look at the schedules and the amount of time and the relative cost and then make a decision. It will cost you €10.3 person to get to Gare de Lyon from CDG if you take the train and 53€ if you take a taxi. Factor in the cost and how comfortable you will feel with getting to Gare de Lyon and if the trip to Paris will save you any time and then decide. Given the frequency of trains from CDG to Lyon, I’d take the train from CDG.
