Take the bus from Avignon to Pont du Gard

We are not renting a car so after reading the Rick Steves information, we plan to hop on the bus. Any tips to offer for this? How did it go for you? Basically, we want to stroll around and take our time. If this sounds like a less than great plan, please advise. Thanks

It’s been a few years since we did it, but we followed the advice in the book and it went perfectly. I had always wanted to see it and was glad we did!

Janet, the specifics are in the Rick Steves France guide book.

I did this in 2017. The guidebook explains how to take the bus, but I would never rely on a guidebook for bus schedules, since they can change quickly. I found the current bus schedule online - pretty easy. Just google for it like I did.

I went in May, and at that time the bus did not drop us directly in the parking lot. I seem to recall getting off the bus at a traffic circle. It was a short walk but simple from the road as I recall to the Pont du Gard parking lot. Just tell the driver where you are going - it's a common tourist destination. (In summer buses may drop you in the parking lot, I think.) Get back on the bus near where you got on to get back to Avignon. In Avignon, there's a bus station next to the train station - you could always get the schedule info there no doubt as a last resort.

In May of 2017, there really weren't a lot of daily buses, so I had to time my trip carefully. I had considered taking the bus on to another town from Pont du Gard and then coming back to Avignon later, but the limited bus schedule made that too tight. I was actually staying in Arles, not Avignon (took the train to Avignon in the morning and then the bus from there to Pont du Gard), so I spent the rest of the afternoon in Avignon.

When we were there it outside peak season in the fall and also had the highway drop/pickup. You probably won't be the only passengers doing this if you gain comfort from others being on the same mission.

Great advice. Looks like many of you were able to take the bus without problems. I will check out the bus schedules when=we arrive as I am reading the bus schedule changes on October 1 and we arrive October 3. Thank you all for the good information.

I am also looking to do this but am getting hung up finding the bus stop in Avignon. RS book states the line is A15 but the Pont du Gard site pulls up the bus schedule for 115. Is it A15 or 115? I am also looking in vain for the website that includes this line. Google does not seem to have the line in the system. Sure would appreciate clarification. Thank you.

My husband and I took the bus from Avignon to Pont du Gard in October 2023, Our hotel provided us with a printed bus schedule, but beware that these are very complicated and the bus can run differently on different days and also seasons of the year. I also believe that the RS book explains the bus schedule. With that in mind, we recommend going to the tourist information office early in your stay so that you can make a good plan .So sorry but I do not remember the exact bus number. Have you tried some of the information in this thread as I believe someone left the website for the bus schedule too?

All said, go if you can figure it all out. We spent several days in Arles and Provence, the took the high speed train to Paris from Avignon. But with everything that we saw and we saw so much (Versailles, Musee d'Orsay, Omaha Beach and more), we absolutely loved Pont du Gard. My engineer husband would say that it was a highlight. Try to plan enough time to hike to the top so you can see how the water flowed. Since we were not taking a tour, we studied about its construction beforehand,. Also, you can sign up for a tour from Pont du Gard which we wanted to do, but we were not able to coordinate. Go to the Pont du Gard website to do that.

You can do it! We traveled all around Provence and Paris using our RS guidebook. We recommend getting additional help from the tourist information offices over hotel advice.. Fortunately for us, I can speak and read French un peu!
Bon Voyage!

You get the bus at the bus station in Avignon. Nicely located just outside the walled entrance of Avignon and next to the train station. You can easily walk there from your accommodation in Avignon. RS has information on this too. You will see where to get the bus returning from Pont due Gard when you get dropped off, just on the other side of the roundabout..

Bonne chance!! Good luck!
