Tagging on to another Alsace thread--Wissembourg

Hi,

I've been reading another recent thread on places in Alsace. We'll be in that area at the end of April. This is our itinerary as it stands now:

THUR–BURGUNDY–BERGHEIM

Drive from Burgundy (near Semur-en-Auxois) to Bergheim
Tastings in the afternoon?
Dinner?

FRI–ALSACE

E-Bikes rental
Bergheim–start
Ribeauvillé (wine co-op)
Hunawihr– (butterfly sanctuary)
Wineries
Dinner?

SAT–ALSACE

Towns–driving to– Riquewihr - Kaysersberg- Turckheim- Eguisheim
See storks
Cave de Turckheim (wine co-op)
Lunch or Dinner–Bratschall Manala restaurant in Kaysersberg

SUN–ALSACE

Mass Bergheim
Walk ramparts of Bergheim
Lunch
Kintzheim–Monkey Mountain

Wineries?
Dinner?

MON–ALSACE–PARIS

Drop rental car Colmar train station
Train Colmar-Paris

My question is--I read in the above mentioned thread about a place called Wissembourg. It looks and sounds so pretty. Would it be worth it to put it into the itinerary in place of one of the other planned days? It looks to be a 1.5 hour drive one way from Bergheim.

Thanks :)

The exceptional town of Barr, just 25 minutes from Bergheim, is not included in the itinerary. You could simply add Barr to the plan and save two hours of driving during your busy four days in Alsace.

Joby,
I know absolutely nothing about Wissembourg, but I would say, while it's probably lovely, it's not worth it for THIS trip.

What are you willing to give up from your current itinerary? You're spending a lot of time driving in France on this trip. Your current itinerary is already filled with pretty and adorable places that don't require sitting in a car for another 3+ hours.

You need to be careful of travel creep. It gets us all in trouble. What's another $25 a night for a room? What's another 100 miles driving? Next thing you know your $1000 over budget and you never made it to that place that started this travel dream. Enjoy the wonderful trip that you've created!

Personally, I love Wissembourg. It's very popular with Europeans, but pretty much unknown to Americans. It has one of the best places for Flammkuchen in the Alsace, also one of the best chocolatiers. Its small, pretty, and much more historically important than a lot of the more popular cities around Strasbourg.

The Battle of Wissembourg in 1870 was one of the confrontations that saw this part of Europe ceded to Germany at the end of the Franco-Prussian War, and they owned it until the end of WWI. The city wall and ramparts date back to the 1100's, and the city was founded in the 700's.

If you're really into wine this is the town to visit. Not so much because it's the start of the French Wine Route for the Alsace, which it is, but because you can take the trolley to the wine gate at the border, where the French-German Wine Co-op is based, and there you can find a number of places to buy local wines at discount and taste before you buy. If you have a car it's about a 10 minute drive.

For chocolates/pastries - Patisserie Au Petit Kougelhopf (Patisserie-Chocolaterie Daniel Rebert is better known, but I like this one better.)
For Flammkuchen - La Mirabelle

Thanks for the replies. After reading the replies and thinking about it some more, we've decided to keep our original itinerary. Jeanm has a very valid point that I'm totally guilty of doing in an itinerary. I have a terrible time of paring down an itinerary and then wondering if I should change something when I spot yet another interesting place or stop. It's really hard to reign it in :)

Joby, I think all of us on the forum have suffered from Fear of Missing Out at one time or another. It really is a slippery slope.

You've put a lot of thought in your itinerary. I think you and your husband are going to have a great time!
