Supplementary Ticket for Eiffel Tower top

Hi Fellow Travelers,

I just want to make sure I'm understanding Rick in his Paris book. If I walk to the second floor of the tower (after having waited in line and purchased a ticket for this option down below - reservations are sold out for my dates), I can purchase a ticket there for the top? Has anyone done this, and/or does anyone know how long the lines are for this on the second floor (since Rick gives such specific wait time for down below: 1-2 hours, 20 min/100 yd...)

Thanks

Yes, you are correct. You can buy a ticket to the top at the second level. I can't say how long that ticket line is, but the line for the lift itself wasn't very long when we were there 2 years ago (fewer people want to go to the top, I guess). I can't put a number on "wasn't very long" because I didn't time it, but we had no sense of it being a bother - and that certainly does register with some other lines we've been on (Saint Chapelle, the catacombs, Notre Dame for some examples). For all I know it was the charm of being on the Eiffel while on line, but it didn't seem overly long.

Thanks Bob,

I'm curious. What day and time did you go? (I'm not really that anal about planning this, just curious ;) )

I was just there a couple of weeks ago, and after much anxiety re getting up the Tower (not so much a fear of being high up, but of getting there, since you can see out of the elevators), in advance I bought a ticket to the 2nd level for 10:30 am on a Tuesday. Not very crowded down below at that time, lines not insanely long, lots of security. Elevator ride to the 2nd floor--I just kept my head down. I was pleasantly surprised to feel not at all bothered about being up there, so after checking out all the views and poking around, I bought a ticket to the summit. No line at all, walked right up to buy and then just get in the elevator--longer ride, again head down. On the way back I stopped at the 2nd floor and walked down the stairs to the 1st, total time spent was maybe 1.5 hours.

We were there on a Friday, August 1 at 9 in the morning. Hope that helps.
