Suggestions on one night stop between Colmar and Amboise

We are traveling by car with another couple in June. After spending a few days/nights in Colmar we are heading to Amboise for 3 days. Instead of driving from Colmar to Amboise in one day (6 hours), we thought it would be nice to make 1 one-night stop someplace in between. We thought Beaune would be a great place to spend an afternoon/evening. Any other suggestions? We are also open to staying an extra day in Colmar or Amboise and just driving the 6 hours in one morning or afternoon.

Thanks again! The forum is invaluable to us as we plan our first trip to France. As daunting as it is to figure it all out, it's a great way to extend the excitement of our trip.

i looked at the route, and Beaune isn't far out of your way, its a very pretty city, nice vineyards and countryside surrounding it. I'm not sure how much of a stop over you would want, or what to do. etc. You can rent bikes and have a wonderful day, biking thru the vineyards to Meursault in time for a nice lunch.
You might consider St Sabin with the nearby Chateauneuf , its just off the highway, and i loved the stay there, its a very nice overnight, good food, etc, perhaps pricey.

What about Auxerre? or Semur en Auxois? Beaune is a great one afternoon town also. We stayed at a nice little inn called Hotel de la Paix which has parking and was an easy walk to Hotel Dieu and the center of town.

Now your talking about one of our favorite areas- Burgundy! So much to see and such great little villages to explore! I don't know if you could get into this B & B in June but it is our favorite of all time- Carpe Diem in Massangis France http://www.b-and-b-burgundy.com If you can get in, then dinner is a MUST while staying there. It would be on your route going to Amboise.

This B & B is in a village of less than 100 people, so you wouldn't walk to explore, it would be done by car. But, check out Noyers-sur-Serein (5 minutes away) and Chateauneuf-en-Auxois, Vezely, Semur-en- Auxois, Auxerre, Montreal, so many great places! If it were me I'd drop Colmar and go here!!

We spent time in Colmar, Strasburg, and little villages of Alsace (which is very cool, too) and also Loire Valley we loved. But, Burgundy is the best IMHO!

Have fun!!

I agree with the others. Your most direct route takes you right through the heart of Burgundy. Beaune would be my choice, as the Hotel Dieu there is unique, but the other towns suggested would all be good choices as far as I know. In June, I'd suggest making a reservation rather than hoping to find a room wherever you end up that afternoon.

Like Susan and Monte, I love Burgundy, but I'd use this trip as a chance to sample it on the way between Colmar and Amboise with a one-night stay. If you like it, come back!

With Burgundy you have a luxury problem now. I agree with the places already mentioned and sure there is much way to discover. I like to add for staying or just driving through Époisses and for a visit Abbeye de Fontenay both not so fare away from Semur-en-Auxois (nice introduction is driving downhill the D954 coming from the D980).

But if you have some interest in cars that unique Bugatti museum in Mulhouse is also a good reason for going to Colmar. With the 3 regions (Alsace, Burgundy and Loire) you will have anyway a nice combination to enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm checking them out now. It sounds like the consensus is making a day/evening stop instead of driving through to Amboise.

Carpe Diem in Massangis is fantastic. We spent several nights and would return absolutely.

Hey Denny-

We have been to Carpe Diem for 7 nights total on two trips and I'd give anything to go back again. The whole region just gives me goosebumps!

Sara- watch Anthony Bourdain TV show in Burgundy. It will give you a great feel for what the region offers with him in Auxerre and Noyers. He is with a French chef who grew up there and is frequently on cooking shows- can't think of his name now.

I am loving this thread. We will be traveling from the south to Paris this fall and had hoped to spend another week in Semur en Auxois, but the little cottage we used last time is rented -- so we may try one of these other towns for a few nights.

We have stayed at a little place near Avalon (and Vezelay and not far from Auxerre) -- a small hotel with an excellent restaurant on the edge of the Morvan Forest Les Moulin des Ruats. We have stopped there twice and it is delightful and you can also do a nice hike in the forest. People come from miles around for the restaurant.

Viamichelin.com gives you two possible routes using autoroutes. The northern one is flatter, more industrial, and large farms--wheat, vegies, etc. The southern one is more interesting--smaller farms, vineyards, forests, hills, animals grazing.

Suggestions for Noyers, Carpe Diem in Massangis, and Montreal put you at the half-way point between the two. Montreal is the best kept secret in Burgundy--a hill village, completely walled with an incredibly decorated church on the top. It has one B and B and one cafe. Noyers, a bit further north, is also walled, somewhat restored, and a bit bigger. Again, it's not visited as much as it deserves. It is what one thinks of when they say they want to visit a medieval village. I haven't been to Carpe Diem or Janet's Les Moulin des Ruats, but have been other places in the Morvan Forest. I'd follow either of those suggestions at the drop of a hat.

Stopping in Burgundy at any of these places will be memorable!

Thanks to all for the wonderful suggestions and recommendations! We reserved at Carpe Diem for an overnight and for dinner! Sounds wonderful.

I'm sure you will have limited time since it is a quick stop over, but try to see Noyers-sur-Serein which is a small medieval village very close to Carpe Diem. That would be my #1 suggestion.

Thanks! I added it to my list of top priority places to visit. I looked at some videos online and it looks absolutely wonderful! I'm getting so so so excited about our trip. Leaving two months from today!

Hi, Sara. We're making the same trip from Colmar to Amboise in May. We've decided to spend the night in Vezelay, but the other suggestions you've gotten are also very nice. Enjoy the trip. I also commented on your question about lodging in Amboise.
