We're looking at a nice place to stay early October and don't want the average hotel. We will be coming to the end of our trip and want something special.
Any ideas in the general area?
We stayed at this hotel, Grand Hôtel ROI René, in Aix a few years ago and really loved the location, amenities and food selections. I see that this boutique hotel is now part of the Accor group but it is one of their 4 ⭐️ hotels.

If you have a car and want something really special, look at Villa La Coste if money is no object. I am not sure it is worth the price tag, but then, I cannot afford 4-digit hotel nights.
For something still very very nice and just a bit more reasonable (but still around the $300-400/night mark, alas), there are several 5-star château-hotels around Aix, including La Gaude and Fonscolombe. Haven't been.
One I have been to, for a seminar in the middle of winter, is the Lodges Sainte Victoire. December was not the best time to enjoy the amenities, but the food was stellar and the place was beautiful. Again, probably around $300-400/night in October...
If you don't have a car, you have to stay in the city of Aix. Hotels there are more traditional as far as I know. My parents enjoyed the Boutique Hotel Cézanne (I was living in Marseille then and met up with them for breakfast), but that was 1-2 years pre-Covid. Roi René also has a good reputation. Both are closer to $200/night.
If you have a car and are willing to stay outside of Aix by about 12-15 minutes, I really recommend this place available thru booking.com (Le Melizanne at Chemin de La Grand Bastide, Fuveau) We stayed there in May. It is a beautiful country home with a stable-converted-cottage and rooms in and out of the home. Free range chickens, a huge beautiful pool, surrounded by a horse ranch. The owners are well-traveled having lived in Moscow, France, and many African countries, now returning to Aix for retirement. They are a joy. We loved it here.
