Suggestions for Dordogne to Paris June 4 -7 that avoid D-Day Area

After we complete the France My Way Tour, we were planning to wend our way by rental car from the Dordogne to Normandy/D-Day beaches, then back to Paris to fly home on June 8. We realized too late our Normandy dates were during the 80th D-Day anniversary, so Normandy will have to wait until our next trip.

Now we need an itinerary leaving the Dordogne by car on 4 June arriving back in Paris the evening of June 7. We will have visited Paris, the Loire Chateaux, Lyon, the French Alps and Nice on the My Way tour. We like history, hiking in beautiful natural places, biking, art, classical music, churches, etc. What can you recommend?

Burgundy -- we like Semur en Auxois because it is beautiful and there are nice day trips to Fontenay Abbey, pleasant towns, and we did some day hiking in the Jura.

The area around Auxerre and Vezelay is also nice. We have stayed at this country hotel, with lovely restaurant on the edge of the Morvan forest and we have also stayed right in Auxerre. The country hotel is a good base to drive to towns in the region.

johntodd721,
Definitely yes to Fontenay Abbey! We were there on a rainy day and it was still fascinating and beautiful.

In 2019 I enjoyed traveling up the western side of France after spending some time in the Dordogne. I didn't have a car, so I stayed in places I'd call small cities with nice architecture, not cute villages. You might reasonably want to take advantage of having the car by focusing on smaller spots, but this is where I went:

Limoges (day trip to Oradour-sur-Glane)
Poitiers (day trip to Chauvigny)
La Rochelle (day trips to Saintes and Ile de Re)

I went farther north than you'd want to go with the time you have available, staying in Quimper, Vannes (day trip to Belle-Ile) and Nantes.
