Suggestions for artist making art along Seine in Paris

Hi, we are going to Paris in June. A friend of mine said there are tons of artists working on the street(s) along the Seine river. I have looked on line, but they don't mention any particular area. We are more interested in painting than charicatures (which is the only thing I have seen written about). Any ideas, near the Seine or elsewhere in Paris?

Also, any areas with concentrated art galleries?

I'm a little confused. Do you want to watch artists paint their paintings of scenery, or do you want your portraits painted?

I don't recall seeing artists on the streets along the Seine. You will find them in Montmatre though. There is a little square up on the hill to the left of Sacre Coeur. It is surrounded by restaurants, tables in the middle and artists set up along the outside of the tables. You can watch them paint while eating:)

I did notice that there seemed to be quite a but fewer artists there this past Sept then there were when we were there years ago.
There were artists doing caricatures, portraits and painting of other things.

The only place I remember seeing artists congregate in numbers is in Place du Tertre in Montmartre. However I saw several individual painters in various places along the Seine and on the bridges across the river. They set up their easels to paint the local scenes so you can watch them as they paint and they usually set up a few of their paintings nearby for purchase. The ones I saw were priced pretty reasonably and quite good. I know I saw a few along the stretch where the booksellers are because that's where the tourists are.

If you buy directly from a working artist, you should be ok, but if you buy an alleged original from someone else on the street, inspect it carefully. Years ago we bought a couple of pictures from a girl who said her father painted them. They weren't expensive and we liked them, but when we looked at them more closely back at the hotel, we could see they were prints that had been embellished with bits of white and gold paint. We got a good laugh out of it and a good story to tell when we got home.
