Taking family to Paris next summer

Use booking.com to look for hotels in your price range with the features you want (which should include air conditioning). It offers a map view to help you with location. Try to get as close to the river as you can afford, and within a few blocks of a Metro station (preferably one where two lines intersect). The "street view" feature of Google Earth can help you "see" a hotel's immediate neighborhood.

When you've decided where you want to stay, try to book directly on the hotel's own website. This saves the hotel money and helps you in case of any problems later with the reservation. Most hotels won't be taking reservations this early for next summer, so don't be discouraged if websites show no availability. Start contacting hotels 4-6 months before the dates you want to stay.

People on this board will have lots of good hotel and neighborhood recommendations, but they'll want to know more about your dates, how many of you there are, and what price range (in euros, about $1.10 to the euro) you're looking for.

Dick, thank you. I have been to Paris 10 times but always by myself for business.

This trip is different--I have my wife, daughter, her husband and their two teenage children.

We will be there July 1-4

You might want to consider renting an apartment, or perhaps 2, to accommodate your family. I like Homeaway.com, but there are other good ones, and many are recommended on this site. Be sure the rental is a legal one, though, and displays a 15 digit registration number.

Yes, johncarter, apparently you know Paris well, which wasn't evident in your original question. In that case I'd suggest an apartment so your family can spread out, people can sleep on different schedules, you can keep some food around and maybe do some laundry, etc. Homeaway, VRBO, airbnb, and numerous other agencies have rental listings. Google "Paris vacation rentals" for a ton of them. Be sure you see a registration number so you know the rental is a legal one. Otherwise you might risk losing it at the last minute.

As with hotels, you'll probably get good recommendations on this forum if you indicate something about dates, numbers and ages of people, budget, etc.

EDIT -- Sorry, I see you did indicate how many and what age ranges -- a three-generation trip. All the more reason to look for a good-sized apartment.

I would definitely go with an AirBNB or something like that if it's a big family trip. If you do go with that, make sure they have their registration number listed on the posting. If they don't, it's not a registered AirBNB, which is illegal in Paris, and they tend to cancel frequently. In terms of where to get an AirBNB, I found this guide to the neighborhoods/arrondissements very helpful when choosing: http://bit.ly/ArrondissementGuide. I tend to like to stay in the 11th as it's a bit quieter but still easily accessible, however, Le Marais is very popular as is St. Germain de Pres if you have the budget.
