Suggestion on Itinerary - Normandy/MSM/Loire Valley

Going to Normandy with husband. Bucket List for my hubby. I booked a ticket to arrive in Paris - on May 28 and departure on June 9th. We've been to France a few times but Normandy would be the first.
We want to experience not only the area of Normandy but also the June 7th parade.
However, I haven't found any scheduling for that weekend which I assume will be busy. We want to include Giverny, MSM, Loire Valley, and a quick 2-3 night stay in the right bank of Paris.
Thoughts on the following:

  • May 28 - May 30 --> Paris
  • May 31 --> Pick up the car and go to Giverny?
  • June 1 - 3 --> Loire Valley and MSM
  • June 4 - 8 --> Normandy (Include D-day Parade)
  • June 9th --> Departure in the evening

**We plan to rent a car once we leave Paris.
*
What towns to stay in overnight? SUGGESTIONS?
*
*{Also have not booked my hotels yet!}
Thank you!

We’re doing a similar itinerary the week before you. So I haven’t done it yet, but it seems like Giverny is out of the way from Paris to the Loire Valley. You could go from Paris to the Loire Valley. Go from there to MSM and Normandy and stop by Giverny on your way back to Paris. Just looking at the map that seems to be a better route.

We are staying in Amboise at le Clos d’Amboise, at Auberge Saint Pierre in MSM, and Hotel d’Argouges in Bayeux - if that helps.
Again, we haven’t gone yet so I can’t give a personal recommendation on these places. I’d book pretty soon though! When I booked last fall, several places were already full.

While you say "Normandy," you don't say where. Even for events and locations pertaining to the D-day landings and the Battle of Normandy, keep in mind that the beaches themselves are 45 miles apart as the crow flies. And you won't be flying. You have to go inland a ways to get on the bigger roads to get between them. Also, many/most sights are not on the beaches themselves. Please let us know from where you will be coming, and of what you are interested in seeing. If, like many Rick Steves people, you are from the States and are primarily interested in U.S. operations regarding D-day, I can recommend the following:

The local tourist bureau in Sainte-Mère-Église has a fairly comprehensive listing of events on their web site. That is the town the current U.S. military uses as a base of operations when they come every year. Be aware that many events aren't formalized and listed online until a couple of months beforehand. SO if you don't see anything or much on any particular day, keep checking back. Difficult for those of us traveling form the States and like to plan ahead, but thst is just the way it is. The big parachute drop (current military and re-enactors) occurs just outside of town on June 8th.

There is an official ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery on the 6th itself. You need to have a formal invitation, but they aren't that hard to get. I went twice—including during the 75th anniversary when presidents Trump and Macron were in attendance. Both times I applied online at the American Battlefields Monument Commission, and learned of my invite/ticket while I was in Normandy. It will take up most of the day, but is the only way to get to the cemetery on that date.

There is a big parade in Sainte-Mère on the 6th and 8th (I think), but everywhere you go around that time you will see restored WWII-era vehicles driving around (Jeeps, half-tracks, tanks, etc.). You can't miss them. In addition, the military and old WWII planes will be regualrly buzzing the the towns and beaches. Always have your camera ready.

I have visited the area around ten times, most of which were during the D-day anniversary. Send me a message if you want any additional info. Lastly, I hope you already have your accommodations. They usually sell out a year in advance in any desirable place, and even longer previous on the "0" and "5" year anniversaries.
