Suggested places to rent/stay and relax, reunite for a week

Hi, We're going to travel to France in June to pick up our daughter who is studying there this year. Our son, who's been in Africa for the year, will be meeting us as well. We need a nice, fun, quiet place to reunite as a family - a smaller, less busy place that affords quiet, relaxation as well as good food and things to do when desired. Does anyone know a place that fits the bill? Also, we'd likely like to rent a home or cottage - recommendations/suggestions welcome. Thanks! Nancy

Without knowing where your daughter is living now, or more about your interests, it's hard to suggest just one area. But let me suggest the Dordogne. Though it's much visited in June, it's very rural and lovely. Canoeing on the river, visiting castles and caves, great food and wine, beautiful scenery. This website could help you find a gite, a cottage or apartment for your family to reconnect, in any part of France. For the Dordogne, or any "quiet" place, i.e. rural, I'd recommend renting a car too. Hope that helps.

Dick's Gites de France recommendation is the very best resource out there. They are almost exclusively Saturday-to-Saturday rentals, so we've sometimes had to plan around that. We're looking at gites in northern and/or southern Provence right now for next summer. An advantage of June is that gite rental prices are generally quite a bit lower than in July and August.

My first recommendation would always be Provence, whether close to Avignon, to the south closer to Marseille, to the north closer to Orange, or farther east in the Luberon. You can find a gite in or near a very small village that will be away from the hustle and bustle of crowds or cities, but larger towns and sights can also be reached by bus or rental car, if you desire. The Dordogne (as well as other regions) does offer a lot, too. Good food will be found, of course, anywhere in France.

Thanks so much to both of you. My daughter is staying nean Nantes. We've been to Provence before (but how can once be enough), and I'll also check out Dordogne. Also, I'll definitely look at Gites de France for the accomodations. Appreciate it greatly!

Nancy, this is a great idea. You could be happy in any part of France that time of year. But you should act soon to lock down a rental, especially for a popular destination like Provence.
