What neighborhood and hotel do you recommend in Paris? We have stayed at the Hotel Clement between St. Germaine des Pres and St. Michel 10 years ago. We're planning for a trip in August and need to know is that neighborhood safe and vibrant as well as we're open to other neighborhoods to stay that are convenient to walk to attractions. Hotel suggestions?
Did you like Hotel Clément 10 years ago and, if so, would you consider staying there again?
Last year we stayed at Etoile Saint Honore, near the Arch and just a couple blocks off Champs Elysees. Excellent breakfast AND afternoon tea.
We stayed at Hotel New Orient ... quite liked the location ... a ‘real’ neighbourhood with lots of people about at night as well as reasonable priced restaurants. Very walkable to the Seine. We recommended to friends who also enjoyed it.
The area you stayed last time, St Germain, is one of my favorites. It’s very safe and vibrant. I also like the 5th (Latin Quarter, where St Michel is), Ile St Louis (the little island next to the bigger island) and the Marais, both in the 4th arrondissement. But other areas are good too. In my experience, all areas where tourists go (1st-20th) are generally safe, day and night, if you use common sense.
We also loved the St. Germaine area and loved our stay in Hotel Bonaparte. It has a small lift which we really appreciated. It is close to a Metro, close to Luxembourg Gardens, many cafes and shops. It is a Rick Steve's recommended hotel as well. While they provide a small breakfast for a fee, there are many places nearby to have breakfast.
I love St. Germaine, and I would stay there, but I typically stay in the Latin quarter. I think the prices are a bit lower than St. Germaine. I find that whole area very safe. It's busy and well lit. I've stayed there once with my college aged daughters and twice I've stayed on my own after my husband left for home.
You can’t go wrong with St Germain... or any of the recommendations made here.
Being by the Luxemboug Gardens (which is in the 5th and 6th arrondissement), my favorite park, is a big plus for me.
We just stayed in the Hotel Recamier on the Place Saint-Sulpice and absolutely loved it. Fabulous location, close to the river, and the Jardin du Luxembourg. We walked everywhere while we stayed there.
We also enjoy staying in the beautiful and peaceful 16th, at the Villa du Square if we have more time in Paris. It's a short walk to the Jasmin metro, but you pretty much have to take the metro everywhere, except perhaps to the 7th and the wonders there.
We recently stayed at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the 5th Arrondissement. The courtyard/garden was beautiful. We met a woman from Canada who has been staying at this hotel every year for the last 40!
