The Louvre Museum is closed from today Dec 15 for an indefinite period due to a staff strike.
Wow, we just left Paris yesterday. That’s sad for all of the Christmas Market travelers who are flying into or out of Paris and planned to spend a day there.
The question these days is, when are they not on strike...?
We were there last week when they had the staff meeting to go on strike. We actually were in line while the meeting was going on - I was wondering why I had gotten an email about a delayed museum opening and then we found out why.
To explain a little: the government plans to construct Le Grand Louvre, a new entrance, separate quarters for Mona Lisa, and more that will be the current president’s legacy.
Staff are striking, demanding the current needs are met first: currently down 200 employees, leaks, broken toilets, broken elevators, lack of security, etc. The current infra structure and the art are in a poor state. Many paintings are in dire need of cleaning.
It’s too bad that international tourists and school groups are affected, but personally I agree with the staff that current needs have to come first.
they could probably fund the needed repairs if they build a separate building for the Mona Lisa and charged separately for it.
It most certainly isn't their year.
I really hope that the bulk of tourists will go see La Joconde and leave when her new wing is built.
I've been a member of the Louvre for years and every year I go a little less because it's such a hassle
