I've been planning a day trip from Gengenbach to Strasbourg in early May and when checking my notes, I have that the city center is about a 15 minute walk from the train station. You can also take public transport but I don't think it saves you much time.
They told me the city center was only 15 minutes from the train station. I thought it quite a bit longer. Take the tram
I was just in Strasbourg this past Sept. The walk from the train station to the cathedral was not bad. Walking over the bridge is a good place to take some pictures.
Google Maps will give you a good estimate of walking time between any two points, apparently calculated on the basis of 20 minutes per mile.
The train station is an easy walk to La Petite, the cathedral, river, and city center. Lots of wonderful shops and restaurants. We absolutely love Strasbourg. It is also an easy ride from Gegenbach. The high speed from Strasbourg to Paris will get you there in no time. Definitely worth the stop.
Oh you must stop and wrap yourself in Strasbourg charm a few hours if you’re passing through! First, you owe it to yourself to step off the train, walk down the platform, through one of the most beautiful Neo classic train stations of Europe, out the front doors right into the …….CERN super collider, UFO-esque, super modern bubble that wraps, preserves, expands the original train station. It’s an absolutely brilliant marriage of heritage and modern. As a connoisseur of train stations, it merits one of my favorites. Bag storage. No problem. This is a modern train station with all the amenities.
Straight out the front door and follow the surge toward Cathedral Notre Dame de Strasbourg. Yeah, about 15 to 20 minutes walking but who’s counting minutes when you’re admiring the wood timbered buildings of Strasbourg. Hopefully you’ll take a wrong turn and get lost another half hour before you stumble out of the narrow roads into the square surrounding the cathedral. Take your time outside slowly circling it. For me, it was the beautiful pink stone of the nearby Vosges Mountains carved into intricate lace like tracery, gargoyles, and statuary on the outside that struck me as one of my favorite churches of Europe. I don’t have any strong memories of the interior but some cathedrals look like the next cathedral if you know what I mean.
Find a cafe near Place Kleber on your way back to the station sit, savor a snack and reflect on this beautiful city. If you get back to the station at just the right time, the light will be setting on the UFO exoskeleton and illuminating the original Neoclassical station like a jewel in lighted display. Sigh. No. Don’t miss the chance.
