Does it worth to go into a nearby town in Germany if we have a car? If so, which town do you suggest?
Gengenbach is a short way away in the entrance to the Black Forest mountains. Attractive walled town.
FYI - Strasbourg "feels" more like Germany than France. So, you will get a German flavor right there without the need to go into Germany.
I'm not sure that I agree that Strasbourg feels particularly German to me.
There are similarities between the two sides of the river, and I very much like Gengenbach which has intact walls in some places, two large and impressive gate towers, cobbled streets, and bächle or water channels like Freiburg im Breisgau. They have a water mill too, as well as a unique small museum. The museum is for the men who used to float the logs into rafts and take them down the Kinzig river. Find another one like it.
The official website for the town is http://www.gengenbach.info/
If you stay there overnight (recommended) you will get a KONUS card giving you free travel for the duration of your stay on all the buses and local trains in the Black Forest and Baden-Wurttemberg and other discounts.
Going 5 to 15 or 20 miles east of Gengenbach drops you right into the heart of the Black Forest.
Have a stroll around the back lanes of the Altstadt in Gengenbach and you will see incredible beauty.
Hi,
Depending on your time, I would suggest staying in Strasbourg but if you do have the extra time and want to cross over, then I suggest Rastatt.
I think in some ways Strasbourg is/feels more German than French. One example, just an example, when serving the draft beer in Strasbourg, it's served German style, not French style.
