We are planning a day trip to Colmar from Strasbourg in December. We don’t how much time we will spend in Colmar and are thinking of purchasing our return ticket at the station in Colmar. Any options or tips are welcome.

There are no return tickets, just one-way tickets. These are TERs, regional trains with no advance reservations and always the same price. Think commuter train. They are very frequent and run at least once per hour, and more frequently at commute times. So you can just buy a ticket and return anytime. There may even still be senior discounts during off-peak times.
