I'm taking train Paris to Strasbourg and the sncf website offers 2 stations: Strasbourg (FR) and Strasbourg Roethig. I've googled and read through RS posts to find out the difference. One person wrote that only regional trains go to Strasbourg Roethig. However, it doesn't seem to be the case, at least now, since the sncf schedule shows the same identical departure and arrival (trip duration) times for both stations, via the fast, non stop trains. It would seem there is only one station? Thanks for your help! I'm still more than 90 days out but want to be ready.
There are two stations in two physically separate places almost 10 minutes away from each other by car. If you look up the addresses of the stations in Google you can map out where they are relative to each other. You want to go to Strasbourg (FR) assuming you want to be near the center of town. Roethig is not even a real station in the sense of having a building and amenities. It's just a spot with a ticket machine and a little cover like a bus stop and it's not even really in Strasbourg.
Other cities other that Strasbourg have two stations, such as Lyon. The train stops at both stations.
If you are taking a fast TGV from Paris, you only have a choice of Strasbourg. If you chose the other station, they'd put you on a local commuter train once you arrived in Strasbourg to Roethig.
And Paris has 7 stations! The one from which trains depart to Strasbourg is Paris Gare de l'Est.
The clue is the main station is the one with just the name of the city. Suburban stations are called "Strasbourg xxx". You can also look on a good street map (not Google maps, that is rubbish for rail), and see the names of stations. If you pick the wrong one, it will show an extra connection at the main station, so you can easily see which the main one is. For example:
Paris Est dep 09:25 TGV 2365, Strasbourg arr 11:12
Transfer time 13 min.
Strasbourg dep 11:25 TER30882, Strasbourg-Roethig arr 11:29
Don’t know if this helps but you can also get a direct TGV train to Strasbourg from CDG.
There are several rental car offices just across the street from the downtown-main train station in Strasbourg if you need to rent a car, it's very convenient.
Thank you everyone. Esp JHK, Sam. I now see that the trains that appeared to be going to either station, in the same amount of time from Paris (fast trains) are all showing the main Strasbourg station arrival times, even if I'd entered the Str. Roethig station destination in the query. So thanks for clearing it up.
So appreciate the info here!
