We will be visiting Strasbourg by car in mid-September. I want to find a hotel/apartment that will have free parking and be easy to access, preferably with breakfast! :) Asking too much? I am considering looking at nearby towns and taking the train in? Any suggestions?

Many hotels have parking but it gets more expensive as you get downtown. Free breakfast is more rare in France than other countries.
I prefer to be near the old center. I found a studio apartment a short walk from the Cathedral through Airbnb. I dropped my car at the train station when I arrived in town so it was a little hike to meet the Airbnb host. When I left, by train, the same hike back to the station.
Taking the train in will result in a roughly two to three km walk to the center, and back. You could taxi to the center.
