Strasbourg, Colmar, Luxembourg

Planning a solo week starting at Geneva and including a multi-day stay in Strasbourg, a day trip to Colmar, and I thought it'd be interesting to take a few days in Luxembourg and fly home from there. What are your thoughts on this brief itinerary? I'm especailly wondering:

Stay in Strasbourg and take a day trip to Colmar? Or stay in both towns? Looked like travel to/from Strasbourg is a lot simpler, which is why I was thinking of a day trip.

Any thoughts about Luxembourg City? How many days would you allow? What are some unique and special things to see there? Where would you stay in the "old city" area? (I prefer small and local hotels or bed and breakfasts)

Best options for flying from Luxembourg back to Boston?

TIA!

I think you could easily spend the entire week in the Alsace and have plenty to see. Colmar is not the only beautiful town there, and there are many more that are really lovely and worth a day trip; such as Éguisheim and Riquewihr. But if you really want to see Luxembourg City, I would probably spend 4-5 nights in Strasbourg, and that would give you the opportunity for several day trips to some of the lovely nearby villages. Then you could spend 2-3 nights in Luxembourg City if you wanted.

In terms of flying from Luxembourg or wherever you end up back to Boston, your best bet is to go to Google Flights, and check the prices there. That will also tell you how many stops there are and whether there are direct flights and so on. I doubt that you would find a direct flight from Luxembourg, so if you're looking for that, you might be better off taking the train to Amsterdam and flying from there.

Strasbourg and Colmar are really close (something like half an hour on the train) so it's easy to stay in one and visit the other. If you stay in Colmar, you can also easily access by bus the beautiful nearby towns like Riquewihr that Mardee has mentioned. We visited Alsace in May of this year and liked staying in Colmar as it gets quite busy during the day but in the evening it's a little quieter, and you can enjoy that time if you're spending the night there.

Luxembourg city is very nice, we spent a weekend there a few years ago and felt like that was a good amount of time. The main thing is walking the city walls and seeing the castle. We also liked visiting Vianden, which was only about an hour outside of town, and has a beautiful castle. The great thing about Luxembourg is all the public transport is totally free. Good luck with your planning!

Hi Lisa,
I like your plan and think Luxembourg City is definitely worth a couple of days. We stayed 3 nights in Luxembourg City last Nov. and really loved our time. It’s a pretty city with plenty to fill a couple of days. We did a city tour, took the free public transport to the wine region on the Mosel (about a 30 min bus ride). And toured the American Cemetery where all of our fallen soldiers from Battle of the Bulge are laid to rest (as is George Patton) If you have the interest and the time I would encourage you to visit.
