Strasbourg Christmas Market - When do I book hotels?

Hi! I'm looking at visiting the Christmas Markets in early December 2024. The tentative plan is to travel from Krakow - Vienna - Salzburg - Stuttgart - Strasbourg. When should I start looking at hotels? I've traveled to Europe many times, but always in the shoulder season and I book only 2-3 months in advance. But I think that will be too late for Christmas markets, especially in places like Strasbourg. I'm looking for budget-friendly options - not shared rooms in hostels, but private room in hostels or budget hotels. I'll take reccos for affordable hotels!

I would book now for Strasbourg and make sure you understand the cancellation policies.

No recommendations for hotels in Strasbourg, though. It and Colmar have been on my radar for several years for Christmas Markets but I will likely stay in Colmar. I stayed there 2 years ago in April and enjoyed it a lot.

I have no hotels to recommend because we stay either in Colmar or just across the German border (we prefer German coffee), but you may find for budget prices in the city you may be a bit late for this year... good luck

Christmas markets and budget friendly hotels don't mix very well. The demand exceeds supply. In January when the markets are done you will do quite well with room pricing. Strasbourg was our most expensive hotel on a Christmas market tour, and that was midweek.

We went to Strasbourg this past December (2023) for the Christmas markets, booking our hotel the February (2023) prior. We stayed at the Hilton Strasbourg and, while clean, quiet with a good breakfast, it was a pretty far walk in to town. I would imagine others have better hotel options than I. But, if your options become thin, the Hilton is a solid choice. Just far.

Book asap. Hotels sell out quick and those that don't raise their prices like crazy.

I stayed at the Sofitel. It needed a major update.

But across the way there was the Hôtel Léonor that is pretty new and in a former commissariat de police... I'd check there.

Thanks so much for all of your help! Does anyone know when they confirm when the markets will open? I've seen a lot of people guessing based on the 2023 dates, but don't see anything confirmed. We can either go Nov. 23 - 30 (my preference b/c I get extra vacation days with Thanksgiving) or Dec. 10-17. I know the markets will definitely be open in December, but it's the November dates that I'm not sure about.

Book now on Booking.com with a refundable rate and you have the room if you need it and if not, you can cancel. Often you just have to pay at the property. We were there for Christmas markets in 2022 and it was wonderful!! If you go to Colmar, try to take day trips out of it on the Navette de Noel bus (or something like that) to the distinctive and adorable little towns close by. It leaves from in front of the train station.

You won’t find it on booking, but I stayed at the ibis budget Strasbourg Centre Gare in Dec. 2022. Budget friendly, across the street (and a bit) from the train station, yet not too far a walk to the market area. And very reasonable.

Thanks so much for all the help! I contacted the Strasbourg tourism office directly, and they were kind enough to provide me with the official 2024 Christmas Market opening dates. Our hotel is booked, and we're excited!

I just booked our Airbnb in Strasbourg this past week. We have a one bedroom, centrally located, at a cost of $939 total for 4 nights, to give you an idea. I can cancel up to a few days before.

I also booked our Vienna hotel this past week. For that one we ate staying at the Nossek.

Looking at prices for December, they were all much higher of course, but these two places were good price wise for us, but only you know what you want to spend.

The market opens 27 November 2024 so as not to conflict with the 80th anniversary of the Strasbourg liberation observance on 23 November.

When we visited Strasbourg for the market, we made a reservation in September and had a very nice room at Hôtel Beaucour. It was an easy walk to the various places where market chalets were set up.

Hi,
I stumbled across this thread while googling the dates for the Strasbourg and Colmar Christmas markets for this year. Looking at 27-30 November which I think will be ok based on previous years dates. Does anyone know when they are?

The Strasbourg tourism office confirmed their markets run November 27 - December 24. So your dates will work for Strasbourg. I unfortunately haven't heard when the Colmar dates are.

In 2021 my mother and I stayed at the Best Western Plus Hotel Monopole Metropole in Strasbourg. My mother prefers a place with an elevator and it was only 3 blocks from the train station. We just took the train to Colmar for the day.

Enjoy.
