Me and my boyfriend are thinking of using Strasbourg as a base for our week of travel in the Alsace region. We're interested in checking out some castles (or ruins), canoeing, and wineries. We're also up for all the culture, food, and drinks we can get our hands on. Suggestions for best places to stay, eat, drink, etc? Also, if anyone has canoed or kayaked in the area, how do you recommend doing that? Are there places to rent canoes, is it easy, etc? We're also looking into a few day trips into Germany, any tips on small towns or cool places to see just over the river? We're willing to go as far as Frankfurt and Munich. Any tips and suggestions are more than welcome! This is our first trip to Europe and it took us long enough to even decide where to start!
Heidelberg is great destination, closer and more interesting than Frankfurt or Munich.
Colmar, France is a great town a half-hour by train from Strasbourg. It could also be a good home base, but adds an extra connection when you take trains toward Germany. Between Strasbourg and Colmar, the Route du Vin villages are served by bus (or rental car).
