Straight to Caen or to Honfleur?

I have seen lots of questions about train vs car rental upon directly arriving in Paris. My family intends to stay in Paris for 4 days first, and then head to Normandy and beyond. My first question is, having adjusted to the time change, is it easier to rent a car in Paris first or catch a train to Caen for the car rental? My second question, if we decide to rent a car in Paris, should we absolutely head to Honfleur before Bayeux (as I am really only going to Caen for a car) or in the interest of time, should we drive direct to Bayeux? Unfortunately, I have to trim the length of my trip and Honfleur and MSM might have to be expendable. Thank you!

(We will be in Bayeux for 2 nights before driving to Amboise.)

I took a train to Rouen from Paris, walked around the medieval center, and picked up a car there, then started (north to south) along the coast. Rouen makes more sense for Honfleur (and Etretat/Fecamp) than Caen. I skipped Caen but now wish I'd visited - next time I'll make Caen part of my itinerary.

I guess it depends on why you want to visit Honfleur. If it's a high priority, then the PPs idea of train to Rouen, then drive to Honfleur makes sense. It makes little sense to train to Caen, drive northeast to Honfleur, then backtrack west to Bayeux.

OTOH, if it comes to a time constraint and cutting either Honfleur or MSM, I would either drive straight to Bayeux from Paris, or train to Caen, pick up the rental and go straight to Bayeux, eliminating Honfleur. 2 nights won't give you a lot of time, either way, if you want to explore the D DAY sites.

It seems like you have an itinerary planned, but it seems odd to drive directly from Bayeux to Amboise. They are not very close to each other, and there are many potential stops in between. Are you interested in Fontevraud Abbey? Dinan? It's pointless for me to say that MSM is "better" than Bayeux, but the really important difference is that MSM is farther from Paris and MUCH harder to get to without a car. Your note about Caen suggests that you don't plan to spend vast amounts of time on the D-Day sights/sites.

I don't know if it still works, but old Rick editions had a scheme to put your luggage in the trunk of your rental car in Rouen, and LEAVE IT in a relatively safe rental-car only garage after you rented it, to walk around Rouen. Haven't done this. My last few car rentals have been pickups in the open air.

Note that many car rentals close for a two-hour lunch in France. Have you considered doing the trip in the opposite direction, taking the TGV to St. Pierre des Corps and doing the Loire first? Not saying which is better for you. Is it a one way car rental, and was there much of a fee for the drop-off? It's great to get over the jet lag, but you could argue (any actual experience?) that half-hour drive is doable on arrival day, and that your departure schedule (from Paris home???) works better with the 4 days at the end. That mainly depends on the flight time, but also on hotel location the night before returning home.

Thank you everyone, for your responses. The trip is still a work in progress and I am trying to get feedback on the best way to tour given the limited time we have and the amount of things we want to see. The plan to head straight to Amboise from the D-Day beaches was really due to time constraints. But I will rethink our direction too.
