Stopover Between Paris and Cinque Terre

Greetings
I am looking for a good stopover for a train trip from Paris to the Cinque Terre (Vernazza). We have usually stopped in Switzerland, but I would like another idea. We would be open to spending a couple of days.

Southern France is an obvious attractive area, but a few years ago I was pleasantly surprised by elegant Turin (Torino) and lively Genua (Genova).
