We are traveling next month from Paris to Barcelona, but we’re looking to make a stop via rail between the two. I am between Montpellier, Avignon or Nimes. We would only be staying 2 nights, so we’re looking for direct rail connections to/from and a half to full day excursion starting from where we are staying. It will be myself, my husband and our two girls (12 & 15). Suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated.

I would suggest Nîmes, with half a day at nearby Pont du Gard. Some people here don't click with Avignon, and onwards train connections to Barcelona will be much better from Nîmes (several direct trains vs only one).
Montpellier's nice enough but it's not as much of an "A-list" destination as the other two.
