Ste Marie du Mont

Has anyone stayed in the town of Ste Marie du Mont? I found a townhouse to possible rent for the week in Ste Marie du Mont. (the "Band of Brothers" house). Owners sound like they are very helpful in car hire etc. (Hubby wants to see all the D-Day stuff)

Just wondering if we're better off staying in Bayeux and using paid tours/guides, so not to deal with having a car. This will be first time in Normandy area.

Thanks everyone!

I haven't stayed in the specific town you mentioned, but we went to Normandy last June and explored it by car. I really enjoyed having our own car to do whatever we wanted and to take things at our own pace. My husband is a veteran and so was also very interested in the World War II sites, as was I. As long as you do your research beforehand, it was very pleasant being able to drive ourselves. By the way, we stayed in Bayeux and loved it.

Thanks sanderskn,

After much thought, I think it may be better off staying in Bayeux as our base.

If you stay a whole week, I think you'll want the flexibility of your own car for day trips. On my first visit to France, I had no problem driving and enjoying Normandy on my own and educating myself at the Caen Memorial Museum. But I'm not well versed in the WWII history and learned a lot from the local guide last time I was there with our tour group. Would staying in Bayeux mean that you don't stay a whole week? Is the house rental dictating your regional focus and do you want it to?
