My husband and I will be traveling to Germany/Switzerland/France for 2weeks in June/July. We are starting in Wiesbaden Germany, where we will stay with friends for 3 days. We plan to rent a car once in France to get around Alsace (probably staying in Colmar area) for 2-3 days on the Wine Route before heading towards Geneva, where we will be picked up for a 5 day pilgrimage in Annecy. We have 2-3 days to get from Alsace to Geneva, and I would like suggestions on what to do/where to stay. Should we keep our car and pay the vignette to drive through Switzerland or should we drop the car in France outside Basel and use trains? We have heard much about Chamonix and Mont Blanc and that town and trip up the mountain sound interesting to us, as does fondue and good wine in that part of Switzerland/France. However, I have also heard wonderful things about quaint villages in Lucerne, Berne, etc. Open to suggestions for lodgings, potential locations and strategies for how/when to turn in the car. We like easy to moderate hikes, good food/wine and the opportunity to meet locals and other travelers wherever we go.
