Staying in St Remy.

Will be based in St Remy. Four full days, with rental car. Where should we go? Not interested in long drives. We've seen a lot of "ruins" over the years in Europe. Suggestions? We'll be there in early June.

Even though you've seen a lot of "ruins", I'd plan to go to Pont Du Gard (approx 40K), it's pretty spectacular. Two city centers we wanted to see but time didn't allow were Arles and Avignon, and are both approx 20-25K). One of our favorite restaurants from our recent trip to France was Gus Restaurant on Victor Hugo Blvd in St. Remy, a primarily seafood restaurant. Very good, great waitstaff, speak english.

Be sure to talk a walk out of the village to the hospital where VanGogh was. I especially liked going there in the early morning, before it was open, but there were surrounding grounds that you can wander around and see the landscape that he painted. Also, wander around the village at night... it is one of my favorite places to stay. You can just head out in about any direction and find a little village. I liked hanging out in the little park in Fontvielle... just a few miles away... not touristy at all... just a normal village. Also, I forget the name, but there is a theatre of sorts in a limestone quarry where the images are shown on the walls... it is spectacular. They were closed for a while, but I think they reopened.

Richard, we stayed in L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue (convenient for east and west travel) and traveled to St. Remy on a day trip with Pont Du Gard and Les Baux (drive by, it was raining and crowded). If you drive east from St. Remy, I think you would really enjoy L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue (a beautiful little town with an awesome Sunday market day if you can manage that) and Roussillon a little further east is spectacular with its red and ochre cliffs. We weren't big fans of Gordes. Hope you enjoy your trip, St. Remy is a pretty neat town, so I'm sure you will.

Nancy, thanks. Sounds pretty close to where we are staying.
Bob, thanks for the input regarding the villages.

Our itinerary is starting to come together.
