Traveling to Marseilles after tour ends in Aix-en-Provence. Recommendations for hotels in Marseilles and Cassis. Which place is better base to see La Calanques? Merci!!
To see the Calanques----Cassis. But you can also take a trip from Marseille---which itself is an amazing city.
I would suggest the Hotel Beauvau in the Vieux-Port.
I find Cassis to be very touristy and very limited. The village takes maybe 2 hours to visit at a leisurely pace, and the shops are not very interesting. Marseille has a lot more to offer and the Calanques boat tours also run from there.
Hotel Beauvau is a great recommendation. If it is too pricey, check out the Escale Oceania or the Carre Vieux Port next door.
I've stayed in Cassis a couple of years ago, didn't get a chance to visit Marseille.
You can easily get the calanques boat tours from Cassis port. I think from Marseille, it's a longer boat ride so they cost more.
I'm looking to visit the area again at the end of May.
I was initially going to stay in Marseille but there are accounts of cars being broken into in parking garages because the thieves just assume you have bags in the trunk or under the hatch.
The Vieux Port is suppose to be "safe" compared to the northern arrondissements.
But you have to wonder if you're subject to your car being broken into, if you have a car.
It's suppose to be only a 30 minute drive from either Cassis or Aix en Provence to Marseille so maybe you can visit Marseille as a day trip?
