Hi Ron.
My husband and I were in Bordeaux for 5 days this fall. For my birthday I wanted to go to saint Emilion and see the medieval town. We spent a lovely day there. Saw some of the major sites, had lunch, had wine and more wine. St Emilion is our favorite in the bordeaux area. There is an easy train/bus to Saint Emilion from Bordeaux and a direct train back. We enjoyed our day trip and did not feel we needed additional time for the town. If you want to wine taste at a Chateau then staying there is likely beneficial. Also we did not have a rental car and relied on trains and buses.
Thanks, that's very helpful. What we are thinking is that we will stay in Bordeaux and book a wine tour in St-Emilion in a van for a half day or so. Then we can decide whether we want to spend any more time there. It's good to know that the transportation to and from is simple.
My husband and I are also planning to be in Bordeaux in April and do either a wine tour or just a day in st Emilion . Could anyone recommend a hotel or b&b in Bordeaux in the center close to trams and main attractions? Thank you.
We are going to try the Hotel Acanthe: http://www.acanthe-hotel-bordeaux.com/en/
It is smack in the middle of everything, right behind the Place de la Bourse, with double rooms from 86 to 96 euros.
