Stay away from Plum Guide and a listing called Art Maze in Paris (11 eme)

We had an awful experience with this Plum Guide rental - Art Maze in Paris, and I would not recommend it. Also don’t trust the Trust Pilot reviews. Please go to forum like Reddit, Rick Steve’s and Facebook for actual, truthful reviews. The reviews here most likely are not sharing all the horrors. Plum Guide will not support you!

Days before our arrival at Art Maze, the hosts suddenly told us the laundry, one of the main reasons we booked this apartment, would be unavailable for a month. When I said that was not acceptable they threatened to cancel our booking. Later they changed their story and said the laundry would work but only if workers came in during our stay to install lights and a ramp to reach it. None of this was disclosed when we booked or in the listing. When I booked in May, I asked about the laundry and was told it was wonderfully lit and in the basement. The listing mentioned a steep staircase with no railing. It never said the laundry was down there or that guests would need to use them. So at the time, it didn’t sound like that “home truth” applied to anything guests would actually access. Since Plum Guide vets their homes, I assumed the property had been checked for safety. In reality, the laundry is down a steep, dimly lit staircase with no railing. This was never made clear in the listing, and we would never have booked this home.

When we arrived the female host who greeted us was cold and unwelcoming, she also accused me of telling her we were checking in at 13h and our arrival time would mess up her day. I never said we’d arrive at 13h though! She confirmed my message weeks prior that we’d arrive after 16:30h. She apparently thought the general Plum Guide check in time of 13h was when I’d arrive. Again, I never told her this and after chastising me for something I never said, she just replied with a “mea culpa 🙏.” Again unacceptable and hostile behavior before we even arrived in Paris.

Once we arrived, she refused to shake my hand. She even left her luggage in the apartment and just told us she’d come back (after we had already checked in and took over the apartment) later in our stay. So that was incredibly intrusive and not what we agreed upon. Her husband, the male host quickly became intrusive as well. It got worse as the heat was not even turned on when we arrived, and we inquired about how to turn the heat on. Central heat was advertised and in fact it was radiant floor panel heat. To add only a few heat panels worked on their concrete floor, and the largest heat unit was broken. When the weather was very cold and rainy. When we turned the heat on, he would text saying our heat setting was “way too high,” that “it’s not even October yet,” and that heating “costs a fortune.” He also dictated which lights to turn on during our stay.

He repeatedly texted and called asking about our checkout time literally a day after we checked into our 8 day stay in the apartment! This man was literally blowing up my phone with calls and texts about our checkout out time when we were on vacation and spending time with friends. Even though we still over a full week left and pressured me to communicate through WhatsApp instead of Plum Guide. He also called and messaged directly after I asked for all contact to stay on the platform. Then the hosts said they needed to come back into the apartment during our stay to retrieve caviar they left behind for their kid’s birthday!

I spent days dealing with Plum Guide instead of enjoying our vacation. They kept saying the issues were resolved, but the hosts continued to contact me day and night. Clearly we were being harassed and these hosts wanted control of our stay and out the home. If you don’t want strangers in your home, don’t list it on a luxury vacation rental website.

Plum Guide made no effort to relocate my family even after I said we felt uncomfortable and unsafe. They only offered a refund after I threatened to file a dispute.

I have only have one piece of advice - HOTEL for your next trip.

When I booked in May, I asked about the laundry and was told it was wonderfully lit and that it’s in the basement. When I asked about safety reaching the basement, the hosts never replied. So they clearly knew this was an issue as they never answered my questions. Since Plum Guide apparently “vetted” their homes, I assumed they assessed the safety prior to anyone booking. In reality the laundry is in a dimly lit basement reached by a steep staircase with no railing. This was never mentioned in the listing and we would’ve never booked a home like this. It is unsafe and nothing like what was promised.

So I just looked at the listing and this is under "Home Truths":

"The staircase down to the basement is steep, concrete and has no railings"

I assume this "hard truth" is why you inquired about safety reaching the laundry in the basement, and you say the owners never replied. I would have punted this rental from further consideration at that point. The Plum Guide" warning is right there in the listing.

Stick to hotels in Paris, that is what we do. Paris is full of self service laundromats, that is what we use.

The warning is there now but it could have been added later, even today. We once had a VRBO rental that we left early; the owner changed his deceptive photos after we left. In our case no money was lost. We moved elsewhere for the remaining months.

Your experience sounds dreadful, like anyone's worst fears for their trip.
Out of curiosity I visited the Plum Guide advertisement for the place. Looks nice, but I couldn't find reviews of it other than yours (assuming its yours, since it's word for word). I won't even consider a place unless I can read reviews (50+ at a minimum: well, I probably wouldn't read all 50 but it's nice to know they're there).

Haven't used a rental platform in a long time, but when I did, one of my biggest concerns was the owner who cancels a booking on short notice. So I looked at all of the reviews for that, and any pattern of cancellation, I moved on.

At minimum you need to comb reviews and the actual ad for the place for deal breakers. This one apparently tells you the laundry is down steep steps -- that would be a deal breaker for old unsteady us. Another is 'loft' type beds that involve climbing ladders. We had places like this 35 years ago but we don't book them now no matter how lovely they are because it is not safe at our age to be climbing down a ladder in the middle of the night. We also want a dining room table because we entertain friends and comfortable chairs in the living space for reading and relaxing.

It appears that this ad for the apartment tells you what you need to know -- you can't expect them to renovate the place to your liking. Don't book places that don't show you what you want. We have been booking apartments in Europe for 45 years; we have never been cheated and never had a disaster. A few places have been disappointing; a few far exceeded expectations; once we had a problem with heat and hot water -- but stuff happens and they fixed it in a reasonable time. Anyone can have bad luck but you reduce the odds if you are careful to triangulate reviews paying particular attention to last minute cancellations by the owner or common complaints. It also helps to be flexible about expectations -- things are not going to be just like home.

What we see today is not necessarily what was in the ad when the OP read it. Ads are changed all the time right up to the moment you read it. I doubt the OP needs a reading lesson from any of us.

@Jojo: That note about the stairs was there, but the listing never said the laundry was in the basement. The hosts also said we didn’t need to access that area as all the bedrooms and bathrooms were located on one level. Had we known that laundry was down there under unsafe conditions, we would’ve booked somewhere else.

@Janet: The listing didn’t mention the laundry being in the basement at all. If it had, we definitely wouldn’t have booked it.

@Elizabeth: Exactly, thank you. The listing was different when we booked and that’s what made this so frustrating. I really appreciate you pointing that out.

From your original post:

When I booked in May, I asked about the laundry and was told it was wonderfully lit and that it’s in the basement

I am having difficulty squaring that original statment with this most recent reply:

Whether the listing mentioned the laundry was in the basement in May, you indicate you asked and were told it was in the basement back then, and now you indicate the listing at that time mentioned the access to the basement was sketchy (steep stairs, no railing, etc) that is still in the listing today.

Seems to me you missed a big red flag in May, or you failed to put the information together...I found it odd there is no picture of the laundry, that would have been another red flag to me.

Regardless, good luck with this.

@Jojo: I get what you’re saying. When I booked back in May, the listing never said the laundry was in the basement. It only mentioned that the staircase to the basement was steep with no railing. I asked the hosts about it because I wanted to be sure it wasn’t something guests needed to access, and they said no since all the bedrooms and bathrooms were on one level. Later, when I followed up about the laundry, they said it was down those stairs and that it was wonderfully lit. So at the time of booking, it really didn’t sound like that “home truth” had anything to do with the laundry.

Sorry if my reply to your question wasn’t clear. Hopefully it is now. But I’ll clarify the timeline in my post so it’s clearer.

No problem, you have cleared up my confusion.

Good luck with this.
