Starting trip in Avignon, best way to get there?

We will be traveling to our airbnb in Avignon with our then 12 month old from the West Coast of the US. Originally I had planned on catching the TGV at CDG to get to Avignon. I am now considering doing a transfer and flying to Marseilles. Either way will be renting a car at the Avignon TGV station or Marseilles airport. We are staying within the historic town walls if that makes any difference. My question is 2 part. CONSIDERING we will have a baby and be flying from the West Coast:

1) would you recommend flying or taking the train from CDG

2) if you recommend flying to Provence, is there a better city to make the transfer? It look like Schipol, Heathrow, and CDG all do transfers to Marseilles.

Train from CDG. I would not drive after overnight flight. And especially not with a baby. You could instead have at least one day car free in Avignon and then pick it up either in the city or back out at the TGV station. Driving into Avignon is not especially hard though. The entrance we used to the walled city is on the edge a large boulevand by the river and there is a large underground parking garage named Palais des Papes. Google maps will find it for you. Where you walk out from there you are right on the big plaza and can walk everywhere.

Yeah, just TGV it. It’s only a few hours, and is a comfortable break after flying. I’ve always managed to fall asleep on the train: it’s daytime, quiet, the seats are more comfortable. Timing may be the only issue. You may end up having to wait in the CDG TGV station for a stretch. It’s not like doing this from Marseille is any easier.
