We will be in Paris next week to start our twice-postponed vacation. Last year friends gave us some Starbucks gift cards that remain unused. Has anyone used one in France? Starbucks might be an option for a restroom break or a chance to sit down and get out of the rain for a while.
Chris
Had some teenagers try this a few years ago. Didn't work The gift cards are in $$ so they couldn't use them in Europe.
Found this on their website; no mention of France.
Starbucks® Cards issued in the U.S. or Canada are accepted at most
Starbucks locations in North America, including airport and grocery
locations. Starbucks Cards can also be used interchangeably at most
stores in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, Ireland,
Australia and Mexico.
Chris, while maybe you can't use the cards - makes sense about the difference in monetary units - we've had Starbucks in Paris and thought our brews tasted better than here in the States; less burnt. I know, I know, the SHAME of drinking an American brand in the City of Light but we had one really close to our hotel, and it made for a quick start to the morning. Was also nice to be able to take the cups with us when on a walking adventure! Oh, and LOTS of Parisians getting joe on the way to work, too, so we didn't feel TOO bad. :O)
Things may have changed since that trip but take-away coffee wasn't as common then as it might be now.
Thanks to all for the info. It is nice to know the French will go for Starbucks too.
Kathy- No Shame in your Starbucks game! We went to one a few mornings because my husband likes what he likes and there were nice tables outside for people watching and very close to the metro. It was the first time I saw those fresh squeezed orange juice machines.
I have no shame in going to Starbucks in Europe, after a week of pleasant little cups, it is a decadent joy to get a 20 ounce brewed (or americano) coffee and sit someplace sipping and people watching.
When we were in Paris 5 years ago, I went to the Starbucks on BD Saint-Michel several times. The coffee was quite good, as was the atmosphere. I have a Starbucks Gold Card that I tried to use on the first visit, but was told, as noted above, that it wasn't valid. I had hoped, at the very least, to get some empty Paris Starbucks cards to take home as souvenirs, but all they had were very generic cards with no mention of Paris or France.
We collect Starbucks cups from the places we visit. The ‘global icons’ collection was our favorite. It’s an inexpensive souvenir that we enjoy every day.
Had good luck using my Starbucks card in the UK and Mexico. The conversion to US$ was no problem -- even got a better exchange rate in the UK than was the going rate!
We are stuck paying cash or using a regular card elsewhere (at least for now) instead of Starbucks card.
I was surprised a few years ago to see that Zurich was full of Starbucks locations, thought for sure they would have coffee favorites
Starbucks is also a good place to use the bathroom and if you buy something-even a bottle of water, you can get Wifi.
People tend to knock chains but we were so hungry one time in Barcelona we ate at a McDonald's. The fries were better than the ones at home and the coke tasted different. Plus the bathrooms were pretty clean as well.
