We are now just 14 days out from our trip so I missed elevator tickets for the Eiffel Tower weeks ago. We are considering taking the stairs; we are an active family with two physically fit teenage boys so I think we can do it even if it's a bit of a work out. Should we buy tickets in advance or are those tickets fairly easy to purchase on site the day of (allowing for more flexibility obviously - silver lining?)?
Usually the line to buy stair tickets is entirely separate from the line to buy elevator tickets -- it uses a different leg of the Tower. When you buy the stair tickets on site you can also buy elevator tickets from level 2 to 3 at the same time. I'd wait till you want to go and the weather is right.
(I say 'usually' because sometimes things change -- but every time I have been there it is this way -- a separate fairly short line for stair walkers)
Last year we were unable to get elevator tickets so we purchased tickets for the stairs. When we arrived, it was a bit overcast, there was really no line and elevator tickets were available. We bought the tickets and took the elevator up and the stairs down from the 2nd floor. The stairs were very interesting and no trouble at all. Enjoy.
Do you know there is another “purchase window” seven days ahead?
The largest batch of tickets for each day go on sale at 1pm Paris Time 7 days in advance...if you log on right when they go on sale for the day you want to visit you should have no problem getting elevator tickets!
I bought stair tickets the day of and waited in a short line. Had no issues and actually enjoyed it. And I was not fit when I took the stairs since I had an ankle injury which I had wrapped. Lots of places to pause and look out. I found it interesting and even if I was able to get elevator tickets, I personally would choose the stairs. Lots of families, kids and grandparents, taking the stairs too. This was in February on a nice sunny day.
